SWARTZ, La. — Most coaches would be upset after coughing up an 11-0 and losing in the district tournament.

But Concordia 13-year-old All-Star coach Kevin Jenkins wasn’t mad at all, because even though the team lost to Franklin Parish 18-14 on Wednesday night, they still finished third in the tournament, which is good enough to put them in the state tournament in Sulphur, La., which begins on July 17.

“We’re still going to state and my little guys are so fired up about it,” Jenkins said. “We’ve got such a great group of kids and I’m really proud of them for finishing third in the tournament.”

Concordia finished 2-2 in the tournament, with both of its losses coming to Franklin Parish.

Concordia scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Jadarius Anderson hitting a two-run double, Kenneth Jordan and Wyatte Boothe driving in runs with singles and Trevor Millican driving in the final two with another double.

Concordia scored four more in the second inning, with Christian Jenkins hitting an RBI single to get it started.

After Concordia scored another run in the third, it looked like they would cruise to victory.

But that’s when Winnsboro began its comeback.

Winnsboro scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to make the score 12-4 and then scored five runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 12-9.

Concordia needed just three more outs in the top of the seven inning to win the game, but Winnsboro broke through with nine runs in the inning to take an 18-12 lead.

Concordia came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Jenkins double but it wasn’t enough.

“We just ran out of pitching,” Jenkins said. “We went to every pitcher we could. The clock just struck 12 on us.”

But even with the loss, Jenkins was more than happy with what his team accomplished in the district tournament.

“I’m just so happy and proud of the kids,” Jenkins said. “They exceeded all expectations.”
