NATCHEZ — The Cathedral Green Wave might not have one particular sports team that dominates its competition year in and year out.

But its consistency in sports across the board has made the athletic program a success.

And that showed when the school finished in second place in the Class 1A All-Sports Award thanks to strong performances and deep playoff runs by many of its teams.

Cathedral finished just a few points behind Myrtle for first place, but the second place finish was its best in several years.

And Cathedral athletic director Craig Beesley said it was some of the non-spectator sports that helped garner the school the honor.

“We’ve added a lot of sports lately,” Beesley said. “Cross country did well for us this year as did girls and boys track. Some of the new sports we’ve added have come on in the last couple of years.”

A school earns points for how well it does in each sport. The farther a team advances through the playoffs, the more points it receives.

The football team and boys and girls soccer team all made the playoffs in the fall and winter, and many Green Wave sports did well in the spring.

The boys golf team won the state championship, the girls track team finished fourth at the state meet, tennis advanced to the state meet and the baseball and softball teams both advanced deep in the playoffs.

“(The All-Sports Award) shows you’re well-rounded in all sports, not just one major sport,” Beesley said. “We did well in football and soccer, and then in the spring, several sports did really well. We participate in a lot of sports and all of them really did well this year.”

Beesley said it was nice to see Cathedral’s name up near the top of the leaderboard this year in Class 1A.

“We’ve won it once or twice in the past, and it was nice to see us get second this year,” Beesley said. “Hopefully we can take the next step and move into first.”
