NATCHEZ — Candidates in the special election for Adams County Sheriff spent a total of $237,568.50.
The bulk of the spending went toward radio, TV and newspaper advertisements and to local print shops for supplies.
The last of the candidates turned in their final campaign finance reports last week.
The deadline for termination reports was Jan. 29, but a nine-day grace period gave the latecomers a second chance.
Craig Godbold, Cliff Cox and Roosevelt Owens filed final reports on Feb. 3, 4 and 5 respectively. All others met the original deadline.
Cliff Cox spent the highest amount at $131,330.61. He raised $134,025.
Chuck Mayfield, who won the race, was next in spending at $58,924.25; he raised $60,440.94.
Randy Freeman spent $30,469.33 and raised 30,900 for his campaign.
Ray Brown spent $6,946.35 and raised $2,820 in contributions.
Gregory Wisner spent $6,089.96 and raised $6,115.81.
Craig Godbold spent and raised $2,500.
Roosevelt Owens Jr. spent $1,120 and raised no money.
Danny Barber, who dropped out of the race early on, spent $188 and raised no money.
Circuit Clerk Eddie Walker said he was happy the candidates ran a clean campaign and filed the proper paperwork.
“It is hard work. You don’t know until you’ve been out there helping someone run a campaign,” Walker said. “But it is nice to meet all the people you get to meet, if only for a few minutes.”
