The Natchez Democrat Top 5 for Oct. 23

Published 11:39 pm Thursday, October 22, 2009

There’s only a few weeks left in the season, and teams are running out of chances to improve their playoff standings and position in the top five poll. At long last, there was some stability in the poll. Four of the top five teams won, and the only team that lost was defeated by another team in the top five poll. Tonight should be another night of great football action.

1. Ferriday (6-1)

Last week: defeated Jonesboro-Hodge 6-3

Tonight’s game: vs. Lake Providence

Why ranked here: The Trojans keep finding ways to win close games in the fourth quarter. A touchdown pass with a minute left allowed Ferriday to escape with a big road win last week over Jonesboro-Hodge. It was Ferriday’s third come-from-behind win this season and their sixth victory in a row. Tonight they host a struggling Lake Providence team in another district showdown. It’s a good opportunity for the Trojans to pick up another district win and remain in first place.

2. Franklin County (7-2)

Last week: defeated Amite County 49-6

Tonight’s game: at Tylertown

Why ranked here: While Ferriday has won six straight games, the Bulldogs have done one better, winning seven in a row following their 43-point victory over Amite County last Friday. Tonight’s game is huge for the Bulldogs, as they are trying to get revenge against a Tylertown team that put them out of the playoffs last season. Tylertown has been ranked No. 1 in Class 3A all season, and a road win by Franklin County tonight might just be enough to vault them into the No. 1 spot in the top five.

3. Centreville (6-3)

Last week: defeated Trinity Episcopal 27-6

Tonight’s game: at Adams County Christian

Why ranked here: The Tigers played perhaps their best game of the season in a 21-point win over Trinity last week. It was the third straight time Centreville has beaten Trinity, and comes a pivotal time in the season. Centreville coach Bill Hurst is hoping that the Tigers can ride the momentum from that big victory through the playoffs in their quest for a third straight state championship.

4. Natchez High (5-3)

Last week: defeated Jim Hill 25-14

Tonight’s game: vs. Terry

Why ranked here: One week after getting blown out by Brandon, Natchez got back on its feet with an 11-point win on a sloppy field against Jim Hill. It was a big win for the Bulldogs as they seek to make their second straight trip to the playoffs, and another big game is tonight. Natchez hosts Terry in a critical district game tonight. A win will greatly enhance the Bulldogs’ playoff hopes while a loss will severely hurt their chances.

5. Trinity Episcopal (6-3)

Last week: lost to Centreville 27-6

Tonight’s game: vs. Tallulah

Why ranked here: After holding down the top spot in the poll for five straight weeks, the Saints have slid all the way down to No. 5 after three straight losses. After losing to three straight Class AA opponents, the Saints get back into District 6-A play against Tallulah tonight. Trinity will clinch a playoff spot with a victory and would be able to clinch the district championship with a win over Huntington next week.
