The Natchez Democrat Top 5

Another week, another big shakeup in the top five standings. The top two teams won last week, with Trinity and Ferriday picking up big wins, but the next three all lost, making for some new faces in the poll this week. Perhaps the hottest team in the area is Franklin County, which zooms up to No. 3 after winning its fourth consecutive game last week. Let’s see if tonight brings more movement to the poll.
1. Trinity Episcopal (6-0)
Last week: defeated Central Private 40-19
Tonight’s game: at River Oaks
Why ranked here: The Saints proved just how tough they really are with an impressive win over previously undefeated Class AA opponent Central Private last week. Trinity’s next three games are all against Class AA playoff teams from a year ago, so the schedule sure doesn’t get any easier.
2. Ferriday (3-1)
Last week: defeated Wossman 16-10
Tonight’s game: at Peabody
Why ranked here: The Trojans trailed 10-0 in the fourth quarter against Class 4A Wossman, but scored two touchdowns in the final minutes to pull out the victory. Ferriday will play another 4A opponent this week in Peabody, and give themselves a chance to pull out another impressive win.
3. Franklin County (4-2)
Last week: defeated Mendenhall 37-7
Tonight’s game: at Wilkinson County
Why ranked here: The Bulldogs got off to a very slow start this season with two straight losses. However, they seem to have found their stride with four consecutive wins as they get into region play. Franklin County opens region play tonight at an improved Wilkinson County team.
4. Centreville (4-2)
Last week: lost to Bowling Green 21-0
Tonight’s game: vs. Brookhaven Academy
Why ranked here: Centreville did lose last week, but so did everyone that was behind them. Therefore, they only fall one spot even though they have looked shaky at times this season. Both of the Tigers’ losses have been shutouts. Centreville will try to get back on track tonight against a tough Brookhaven team that is undefeated in Class AA.
5. Natchez High (3-2)
Last week: lost to Meridian 35-0
Tonight’s game: vs. Oak Grove
Why ranked here: Natchez’s offense could get nothing going against Meridian, but once again, since everyone else lost, there is nowhere for the Bulldogs to drop. Natchez has another tough game tonight against Oak Grove, ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 6A. They need to win to avoid falling to 0-2 in Region 3-6A play.
