We knew there was going to be a shakeup in The Natchez Democrat’s Top 5 with four of the top five teams facing each other last week, and was it ever. Block showed its strength with a 35-0 win over Vidalia while Ferriday did itself proud with only a 12-6 loss to Natchez High, a school four classifications larger. Trinity keeps on keeping on and remains at No. 1 for another week.
1. Trinity Episcopal (3-0)
Last week: defeated Brairfield 40-19
Tonight’s game: vs. Alpha Christian
Why ranked here: Trinity played a solid four quarters of football in its 21-point victory over Briarfield in its district opener. The Saints step out of district this week to face a high-flying Alpha Christian team.
2. Block (1-0)
Last week: defeated Vidalia 35-0
Tonight’s game: vs. Ferriday
Why ranked here: The Bears completely dominated the previously No. 5 ranked Vikings in every facet of the game. Block’s running game was unstoppable and the defense held Vidalia to just 18 total yards in the first half. Block gets a stiffer test tonight against No. 5 ranked Ferriday.
3. Natchez High (3-0)
Last week: defeated Ferriday 12-6
Tonight’s game: vs. Warren Central
Why ranked here: Natchez is 3-0, but hasn’t exactly played the toughest schedule yet. And many people expected the Bulldogs to win last week’s game much more convincingly than by just six points. The schedule gets much tougher from here on out, and if Natchez can continue to win, they’ll move up in the ranking.
4. Centreville (2-1)
Last week: defeated Huntington 56-28
Tonight’s game: vs. Silliman
Why ranked here: After a season-opening loss to Oak Forest, the Tigers seem to have righted the ship with two straight wins, including a huge 22-21 win over rival Parklane two weeks ago. Centreville is used to starting slow. Just last year they began the season 2-2 before winning 11 straight games en route to the state title.
5. Ferriday (0-1)
Last week: lost to Natchez High 12-6
Tonight’s game: at Block
Why ranked here: The Class 2A Trojans weren’t given much of a chance last week against Class 6A Natchez last week. However, Ferriday led 6-0 at halftime before running out of gas in the second half and falling 12-6. They have another chance to make a big statement when they take on No. 2 ranked Block on the road tonight.
