WOODVILLE — A week after opening its season with a big win over Christian Home Educator’s Foundation, Wilkinson County Christian will try to improve to 2-0 against an unfamiliar opponent.

The Rams will play Ben’s Ford Christian, which is playing its first year of 11-man football after playing eight-man football the past two seasons.

Ben’s Ford opened its season last week with a 22-6 loss against Amite School Center.

“They are a young team, but I have seen a bunch of improvement on film from their jamboree to their first game last week,” WCCA coach Sam Byrd said. “They are what I call a speed set. They run two wings with a single back.”

Byrd said he hopes to see the same thing from his team in the Rams’ second game as he saw last Friday, when WCCA crushed CHEF 40-6.

“We had a lot of good leadership from our seniors,” Byrd said. “I saw some good things in the huddle with them talking to the younger kids and encouraging them. It’s important for the big guys to lead the younger guys, motivate them and do what needs to be done.”

Another important thing Byrd saw in last Friday’s win was that the team stayed healthy.

That is a marked contrast from last year, as the Rams were ravaged by injury, leading Byrd to rotate several different players at the quarterback position.

“Our main goal each week is to stay healthy and take care of business,” Byrd said. “I think last year we wound up going through four or five quarterbacks. It was a long year. Hopefully this year we’ll keep rolling where we are right now. We’re definitely trying to get off to a good start.”
