Cathedral gets revenge against Franklin County

NATCHEZ — It’s all a matter of attitude for the Cathedral slow-pitch softball team.
One week after sleepwalking through a 10-0 loss to Franklin County, the Green Wave got an attitude adjustment and exacted some revenge on the Lady Bulldogs in a 3-2, eight-inning victory Monday evening.
“We weren’t playing ball last week,” Cathedral coach Gary Blackwell said. “Attitude is everything and we didn’t have it. This week we came to play.”
But it still almost wasn’t enough for the Green Wave, as they entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 2-0.
Franklin County had scored two runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by Vintrice Briggs and Desiree Buie, and kept that lead through the seventh.
But with two outs and runners on second and third, Cathedral’s Shannon Mire hit a hot shot to third base.
The third baseman made a nice backhanded stop, but threw wildly to first base, allowing the tying run to score.
After setting down Franklin County in order in the top of the eighth, Cathedral (3-1) went to work in the bottom of the inning.
Betsy Daggett beat out an infield single before Ginny Daggett ripped a shot to the fence in right field for a triple that scored her sister for the winning run.
“We had the right two players in that situation with Betsy on base and Ginny hitting,” Blackwell said. “As soon as it went past the outfielder, I knew Betsy was going to score with her speed.”
Betsy Daggett was 3-for-4 in the game while Mae Durkin was 2-for-3 with a double.
Rachel Smilo was the winning pitcher.
KeKe Collins had a double in the losing effort for Franklin County.
Ginny Daggett said last week’s loss to Franklin County made the Green Wave refocus on playing good softball.
“Losing to them last week made us real sad,” Daggett said. “We wanted to do better than that. Tonight, we showed what we can do when we come out and play together as a team.”
And Monday’s comeback victory is something that Blackwell hopes can carry the team throughout the season.
“This win was very, very big for us,” Blackwell said. “It showed the girls that we can compete well against a quality opponent like Franklin County. If we can play that well against (district opponents) West Lincoln and Bogue Chitto, we’re going to the playoffs.”
