VIDALIA — Jarrett Hoffpauir’s Major League Baseball dream has finally come true.
After two years of playing for the Memphis Redbirds — the St. Louis Cardinals’ AAA affiliate — the Vidalia native and former All-American at Southern Miss was called up the the big leagues on Wednesday.
Hoffpauir was in uniform for the Cardinals in their 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants Wednesday night but did not play in the game.
“This is a dream come true for Jarrett,” Hoffpauir’s dad and Vidalia High baseball coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “This is what he’s worked for all his life. I’m sure he’s on cloud nine right now.”
Hoffpauir was in Albuquerque, N.M. preparing for the Redbirds’ game against the Albuquerque Isotopes Wednesday night when he was called into Redbirds manager Chris Maloney’s office.
“The manager told him, ‘Jarrett, you’ve been traded,’” Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “He said, ‘You’ve been traded to St. Louis, you’re going to the big club.’”
Jarrett Hoffpauir could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
Hoffpauir was called up following a wrist injury to infielder Mark DeRosa.
Cardinals pitcher Clayton Mortensen was sent down to Memphis to make room for Hoffpauir on the roster.
Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said he doesn’t know if his son will stick in the majors at this point, but even if he doesn’t, it will be easier for him to be called up again at a later date.
“I don’t know how long it will last, because he got called up due to an injury,” Hoffpauir said. “But you’ve got to get your foot in the door. Once you get your foot in the big leagues, it makes it a little easier next time.”
The Cardinals play the Giants at home again today before heading to Cincinnati to play the Reds in a weekend series.
“There’s going to be a white pickup truck following them all the way,” Hoffpauir said.
Hoffpauir said the outpouring of support from the community has been heartwarming.
“We found out at about noon (Wednesday) and the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since,” he said. “There are so many well-wishers in the area, people who have supported Jarrett. We will carry all that support to Jarrett and let him know he’s got lots of people pulling for him.”
