NATCHEZ — Two days are down, and there’s just one left in the 30th annual Natchez Community Cancer Tennis Tournament.

Championship matches in most of the divisions take place today at Duncan Park.

Consolation matches begin at 9 a.m. and the championship matches follow.

The final championship matches are scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.

While the tournament finishes up today, tournament co-chairman Noreen Pyron said the first two days couldn’t have gone any better.

“The weather has been just great,” Pyron said. “It’s the first time in about seven years that we haven’t had any rain. So that has been perfect for us.”

Pyron said that as of Monday, only 52 people had signed up for the tournament. However, she was right when she said many people wait until the last minute.

Between Monday and the Wednesday deadline, almost 90 people signed up and the tournament field was full with 140 players, more than what Pyron had expected.

“We’ve had a lot of new people come play in the tournament this year,” Pyron said. “And hopefully they’ll want to keep coming back. Everybody is having a good time.”

And the tennis has been spectacular, especially in the men’s open doubles division, Pyron said.

“It’s been really fun to watch,” she said. “If you like to see good tennis, come out and enjoy it (today).”

The tournament is raising money for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society as well as the Natchez Community Tennis Association.

The money that goes to the cancer society will help local children attend Camp Sunshine, a camp for children with cancer.

“We hope to raise between $5,000 and $6,000 from the tournament,” Pyron said. “That’s about what we normally raise.”
