NATCHEZ — The youth summer tennis program at Duncan Park is going so well that tennis director Henry Harris has had to call in some help.
Two tennis players from the Alcorn State University tennis team have come to Natchez to help give lessons at the third annual summer program.
And Alcorn State juniors Pushpendra Rajpurohit and Alex Dominguez are having a fun time doing it.
“It’s really fun,” Dominguez said of giving lessons to Natchez youth. “You can learn from them how to coach better and apply it to your future.”
It is Dominguez’s first summer helping the Duncan Park tennis program, but Rajpurohit also helped out last summer as well.
“I just love the game, and enjoy teaching it to the youth,” Rajpurohit said. “Even being a player you can learn from mistakes and help them to become better tennis players.”
Harris and the college players are giving private lessons now, but lessons for everyone begin on June 1, and Harris is expecting the biggest group of kids he’s had.
“The first year we did it we had 89 kids and last year we had 99,” Harris said. “This year we already have over 100.”
And that is why he needs all the help he can get from the college athletes.
“The kids see me nine months out of the year,” Harris said. “I hit the ball like an old man, but these guys hit the ball like the kids do. The kids can relate to that. It’s a big plus for our program because there are so many kids.”
Registration for the summer camps are until May 29 and forms are available at the Duncan Park Tennis Center.
Classes are Pre-K through sixth grade and seventh grade through 12th grade.
The lessons are Monday through Thursday and last until July 17.
There will also be a free clinic next Monday for kids ages 3-5 and 6-8 in recognition of May being tennis month.
The lessons will last from 3 to 5 p.m.
