NATCHEZ — Cathedral continued its spring athletic success last Saturday at the Region 4-1A track meet at Madison Central High School.
The girls team finished first in District 7-1A and second in Region 4-1A and advanced nine teams to the South State meet, which will be Saturday at St. Andrews.
The boys team didn’t fare quite so well, but still managed to advance three people to the South State meet after finishing third in District 7-1A and sixth in Region 4-1A.
“The girls did the best they’ve done in quite a while,” Cathedral track coach Josh Loy said. “Every girl qualified for South State except for one. Overall it was a very good day.”
Members of the girls team that qualified for the South State meet in individual events were Epiphany Jackson in the shotput and discus, Ginny Daggett in the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, Ana Perry in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, Betsy Daggett in the 400-meter dash and Emily Hall in the 800-meter run.
The 100 and 200-meter relay teams of Betsy Daggett, Ginny Daggett, Perry and Maddie Kirkwood also qualified for South State.
The boys who qualified for South State were Dylan Sandidge in the 3,200 meters, Coulter Ward in the 800 meters and JaDarius Ealey in the long jump.
The success of the teams was even more remarkable considering it was only the second track meet they had participated in all season.
“All of our other meets were rained out,” Loy said. “I’ve been fortunate to have a good group of kids that work hard and want to get better. We’ve improved so much from the one meet we ran that it’s not even funny.”
Trinity’s track teams also had success over the weekend.
The Trinity girls team finished in third place at the MPSA Class AA South State meet while the boys finished sixth.
The top four finishers from each individual event advanced to the State meet, which will be this weekend at Mississippi College.
The field events are Friday and the track events will take place Saturday.
Jheri Ogden was the big winner for the Lady Saints, taking first place in the 800-meter and 3,200-meter run and second in the 1,600-meter run.
Madelyn Cross also had a first place, winning the 400-meter dash. Bethany Ogden was second in that race.
Cross also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash.
The Lady Saints 400-meter relay team of Jheri Ogden, Bethany Ogden, Brandis White and Cross punched its ticket to State by finishing fourth in the event.
The boys didn’t fare quite as well, finishing sixth, but did advance several athletes to the State meet.
R.J. Fleming finished second in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash and third in the long jump.
Bryant Pearson also advanced to State with a third-place finish in the discus.
The Saints 100-meter relay team of Kent King, Wells Middleton, Chas Moroney and Fleming finished third, as did the 200-meter relay squad of King, Nick Partridge, Moroney and Fleming.
ACCS also had some athletes advance to State.
Nikki Worthey finished third in the girls high jump while Daniel Guedon finished third in the boys 3,200-meter run and Lee Swinney finished second in the pole vault and third in the 110-meter hurdles.
