WOODVILLE — Despite having two young teams, the Wilkinson County Christian boys and girls track team won the District 6-A meet last week.
Both teams advanced to the South State meet, which will take place next week at Silliman Institute in Clinton, La.
The field events will be on Wednesday and the track events will take place Saturday.
WCCA track coach Sam Byrd said he was very proud of his young teams for taking first place in district.
“They have done real well,” Byrd said. “They showed a lot of guts and did some very good things.”
Byrd pointed out the efforts of Matthew McGraw, Luke Whittaker, Todd Gonda, Tip McKenzie and Darius Hunter in the track events.
Whittaker, Gonda and Jacob Dooley performed well in the field events and Harley Wheeler was a standout in distrance running, Byrd said.
“We had a couple of freshmen step up for us too,” Byrd said. “Davis Bankston and Austin Rabalisis performed very well.”
The girls team won their meet with ease. Byrd gave credit to the relay teams of Bethany Fletcher, Caroline Walker, Terri Fisher, Mary Claire Netterville and Jessica Reynolds.
Allie Fontenot and Hannah Ashley led the way in the field events, along with Walker, while Netterville and Reynolds performed well in the long jump, Byrd said.
“I was thinking the girls would win and thought the boys would have a close battle,” Byrd said. “Both the boys and girls did a great job. It was a good day for us. I’m really proud of everybody.”
