Commission: Lake ban still holding

VIDALIA — Don’t take your boat out of its dock just quite yet.
The Lake St. John Lake Commission passed a resolution Wednesday night saying the lake would remain closed to boaters until the gauge drops below 55 feet.
The level sat at 56 feet Wednesday afternoon.
The resolution came only hours after the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office issued a release saying the lake was open for traffic.
But commission member Billy Rucker said it’s not yet time to lift the boating ban.
“If we get the boat (in the lake), we can have them arrested,” he said.
The lake level is high due to heavy rains in recent weeks, and Rucker said continued storms Thursday didn’t help matters any.
Boats create wakes that send waves splashing on the sea wall and piers lining the lake causing damage, he said.
Rucker estimated that the lake may be at 54.9 — and therefore open to boats — by Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
The initial ban on boating came on March 27.
