CENTREVILLE — The Huntington Hounds were able to hang with Centreville for a couple of innings Monday night, but once the Hounds ran out of pitching, it turned into a runaway.

Centreville scored five runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to turn a close game into a 14-2 rout.

“We started real good with them,” Huntington coach Leo Eliser said. “Jess (Dossett) pitched well. We just made mental mistakes.”

Some of those mistakes came in the form of three errors. Centreville made no errors in the game.

Huntington actually led 1-0 after one inning but Centreville came back with five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

After the Hounds cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the third, the Tigers put the game away with seven tallies in the bottom of the frame.

Centreville added its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The game was called after five due to the 10-run mercy rule.

“At one time it was 5-2 in the (third) inning and I ran out of pitching,” Eliser said. “We have a district game (today) and I didn’t want to throw any of my starters. Centreville is a very good (Class) AA team. They are well coached and very tough.”

Brad Jelks, who held Huntington to just two hits, was the winning pitcher for Centreville while Dossett took the loss.

Hunter Travis and Tyler Towles each had multiple hits for Centreville while Jordan Wilson had a double for Huntington.

The Hounds get back into district play today with a home game against Franklin Academy.

The junior varsity game begins at 5 p.m. while the varsity contest will get under way at 7 p.m.

Centreville’s next game is today at Central Private. The JV game is at 4:30 p.m. with the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
