FERRIDAY — To Ferriday Lady Trojans coach Lisa Abron, the state playoffs shouldn’t be about pressure. It should be about having fun.
And the Lady Trojans hope to have lots of fun the next couple of weeks, beginning tonight when they host Lakeview in the first round of the LHSAA Class 2A playoffs.
“I don’t see (the playoffs) as pressure at all,” Abron said. “The players love what they’re doing right now, and they see the success they’ve had so far. They’re having a lot of fun with what they’re doing. I feel like they’re really hungry for it.”
Ferriday is the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, and Lakeview is the No. 29 seed.
However, Abron is not overlooking the Lady Trojans’ first round opponent.
“No one is going to take anyone lightly,” Abron said. “At this point, everyone is playing for a win. It’s do or die. Anyone could get beat on any given night.”
Ferriday, which clinched the District 2-2A championship with a 43-40 win over Lake Providence on Monday, will be without senior Jelessia Davis, who tore ligaments in her left ankle and will miss the remainder of the season.
“It’s unfortunate because she is a senior, but we’re not going to sit around and mope about it; we just have to go play,” Abron said. “We have other players who need to step up and take her place. The only thing she can do now is support us from the bench.”
The Lady Trojans have earned their sparkling 28-5 record by playing quick offense and pressure defense, and Abron said that is not going to change now that the playoffs are here.
“We’re going to stick to our game plan,” Abron said. “We like to play up-tempo and use that to our advantage. We have some speed and size. If we box out and do the things we’re supposed to do we’re going to try to put the game away early. That’s the goal.”
