PASCAGOULA — Cathedral arrived for its Class 1A-3A South State Championship game against Resurrection 45 minutes late.
Once they finally got to the field, things got even worse.
The Green Wave allowed two goals in each half to the Eagles and dropped a 4-1 decision.
“We were running late, and I think that was what hurt us,” Cathedral coach Rick Simons said. “We didn’t have time to relax and do anything we wanted to. We didn’t have a chance to get our feet up underneath us.”
Resurrection opened the scoring with a goal by Adam Fox just three minutes into the game on a ball that trickled past Cathedral goalkeeper Aaron Sandifer.
The Eagles increased the lead to 2-0 at the end of the first half when Zach Moorer scored on a penalty kick following a Cathedral foul in the box.
Resurrection found the back of the net twice more in the second half. Moorer banged yet another penalty kick home before Matt Millette closed the scoring for the Eagles.
Cathedral’s only goal came from Austin Walker when he headed a corner kick past Resurrection goalkeeper Zach Brown with three minutes remaining in the second half.
“(The result) was disappointing for sure,” Simons said. “There are a lot of disappointed kids. We didn’t just come down here to have a light, friendly game. We wanted to win.”
Cathedral finished its season with a 14-6 record and advanced farther in the playoffs than they ever had before.
“The players have a lot to be proud of this year,” Simons said. “From where we were last year to this year is leaps and bounds.”
