After huge win, Block prepares for Jena

JONESVILLE — The Block Bears might be coming off their biggest win in years, but head coach Benny Vault wants his players to put it behind them quickly.
Block took a 12-6 road victory over rival Ferriday Friday night and will return home to face off against another rival — the Jena Giants.
And Vault said it is important that the Bears not relish their victory over the Trojans if they want to keep their success going Friday against the Giants.
“We’re trying to take it one week at a time,” Vault said. “Every game is an important game to us. We’re trying to learn how to win and can’t take anybody for granted. We want to put last week behind us so we don’t have any stumbling blocks.”
The key to Block’s win over Ferriday was a tenacious defense that allowed just 166 total yards of offense to the Trojans, including just 26 rushing yards.
“Our defense is playing very well,” Vault said. “We play at a high tempo and that’s what we’ve been aiming for. We want to keep the game sped up and put pressure on the other team’s offense. There’s still some things we need to work on, but as far as being aggressive and attacking on defense, they’re doing what we ask for.”
And the Bears defense must continue to be aggressive if they want to stop Jena’s offense, especially running back Eric Bowen.
The Giants are 0-1 on the season after falling to Iowa by the score of 41-27 last week.
“They’ve got a shifty running back in Eric Bowen that we’re going to have to try and stop,” Vault said. “We have to be able to contain him if we want to be successful.”
However, the Giants defense may be susceptible to a good offense, which is what Vault wants to see the Bears improve upon after scoring just 12 points against Ferriday.
“We had some things from it being our first game and didn’t make adjustments like we should have,” Vault said. “Sometimes we were maybe a block or two away from having a big play. We didn’t put up a lot of points, but after watching the film, we were better than I thought we were.”
