NATCHEZ — Officials at Trinity Episcopal and Adams County Christian have decided the old mantra “Better safe than sorry” applies to this weekend’s high school football action.
Both school have moved their scheduled games Friday back a day.
Trinity and ACCS will both play on Thursday night this week to try and avoid Hurricane Ike.
Trinity will host Tri-County Academy and ACCS will host River Oaks. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.
The hurricane is projected to make landfall sometime late Friday or early Saturday and latest projections have it striking the Texas, Mexico border.
However, the storm could always change directions when it enters the Gulf of Mexico, which prompted the two school to change the date of their football games.
“We were scared of the weather and just wanted to do this as a precaution,” Trinity coach David King said. “The Tri-County athletic director and I talked about it and not knowing anymore than we did about the storm felt the safest thing to do would be to move the game to Thursday.”
Trinity’s junior high football game will also be moved because of the hurricane.
The Saints will play at Jackson Prep tonight at 6:30 p.m.
ACCS football coach Paul Hayles said safety was the main concern for moving the Rebels game against River Oaks to Thursday night as well.
“River Oaks called us and said they had been notified by their local autuorities that the weather could turn into a bad situation,” Hayles said. “We’d rather be safe than sorry. If the sun in shining on Friday, I’d still rather be safe. You have to take a lot more into account than just game time situations.”
Like Trinity, the Rebels varsity team isn’t the only one affected by the schedule change.
ACCS’s junior varsity game against River Oaks, which was supposed to be played Thursday, will now be played Sept. 29 and Monday’s junior varsity game against Trinity has now been moved to Sept. 22.
