WINNSBORO, La. — The Vidalia 9 and 10-year-old All-Stars’ games against Winnsboro are becoming the stuff of legends.
After defeating Winnsboro 15-14 in the opening game of the sub-district tournament, Vidalia defeated them by the exact same score in the tournament championship game, rallying from a run down in the bottom of the sixth to win it and advance to the district tournament in Monroe, La.
Vidalia trailed 14-13 in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and a runner on third when Pate Shirley hit a walk-off home run over the centerfield fence.
“That’s about as sweet as it gets,” said Whest Shirley, Vidalia’s coach and Pate’s father. “We’re still riding on cloud nine.”
Cole Cangemi was the winning pitcher, tossing the final four innings after Shirley pitched the first two.
“I’m proud of the way they played,” Whest Shirley said of his team. “Every inning we get together in the huddle and ask them what the score is and it’s always 0-0. We play every inning like it’s its own game. We never give up until the umpire says ‘ball game.’”
Vidalia will play Osterland in the first round of the district tournament at 7 p.m. Saturday.
