HAZLEHURST — It took a while for the Natchez 10-year-old All-Star’s bats to get heated up, but once they did, it was an explosion.

Natchez scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat the Wesson All-Stars 10-0 and win the sub-district tournament Wednesday night.

Eight of Natchez’s runs came with two outs in the inning and the game was called due to the mercy rule.

“It was a pitcher’s duel going into the fourth,” Natchez coach Jeff Webb said. “Their pitcher threw well until the second time through our order. We started to see the ball better and got on it. They were pretty hyped up that last inning.”

Will Moffett got the run-scoring barrage started with a two-run single and Edwin Byrne had the big blow of the inning with a three-run triple that put Natchez up 6-0.

Darrick Lewis and Jeremy Myles hit back-to-back doubles that scored two more runs and Andrew Beesley followed that up with an RBI triple to make the score 9-0.

Skeeter Myles then ended the game when he beat out an infield single that scored Beesley for the 10th run of the inning.

The offensive barrage overshadowed yet another outstanding pitching performance by Natchez’s Tyler Wilson.

Wilson pitched a complete game one-hitter in Natchez’s opening game of the tournament, a 3-1 victory over Copiah.

He almost matched that in Wednesday’s championship game, tossing a two-hit shutout.

“(Tyler) pitched really well,” Webb said. “He had a great tournament.”

Natchez advances to play McComb in the district playoff series. Game 1 of the best of three series is 6:30 p.m. Saturday at McComb with Game 2 and an if-necessary Game 3 Monday night at Duncan Park in Natchez.
