NATCHEZ — It was the little things that kept the ACCS Lady Rebels from taking a softball victory Tuesday evening.
Errors and failure to knock key runs in did in the Lady Rebels in a 9-6 loss to Amite School Center.
The loss drops ACCS to 1-2 on the young season.
“Our defense really cost us today,” ACCS coach Rick Fife said. “We didn’t make the routine plays we needed to. I’ve told the girls that if we take care of the little things, the big things will take care of themselves. We didn’t do that today.”
It looked like it was going to be a high-scoring game after the first two innings.
Twice, Amite School Center jumped out to a lead, but both times, ACCS came back.
After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first, the Lady Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the inning.
ASC scored twice more in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead, but ACCS came back in the bottom of the second with three runs of their own to tie the score up.
However, the turning point of the game was the top of the fifth inning.
Amite scored three runs in that inning thanks to two ACCS errors.
“Our offense is definitely ahead of our defense at this time,” Fife said. “At least half of Amite’s runs were unearned. That was the turning point of the game.”
Amite added another run in the top of the seventh inning and held off a brief ACCS rally in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory.
The Lady Rebels will be at home once again to face Parklane Academy Thursday at 5 p.m.
