WOODVILLE — WCCA scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to trip up Huntington and take a very important District 6-A win Friday afternoon.
An infield hit by George Davis scored Cory Havard from third base as the Rams came back for the 5-4 victory.
With the win, WCCA (15-6, 6-1) maintained first place in the district by one game and will play Tallulah Academy Tuesday with a chance to lock up first place.
Huntington fell to 8-13 overall and 3-5 in district play.
“Huntington battled us the whole game,” WCCA coach Ray Olive said. “Both teams fought hard.”
WCCA jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Huntington scored three runs in the top of the third to tie the score.
Joey Roberts then hit an RBI single in the fourth inning that gave the Hounds the lead.
However, WCCA tied the score with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then won the game on Davis’ hit in the bottom of the seventh.
The two teams had to battle the elements as well as each other. The game was moved to 3 p.m. to try and avoid the stormy weather and was played in a steady rain from the third inning on.
“We had a 20 minute rain delay during the game,” Olive said. “It was some sloppy conditions.”
