NATCHEZ — Many kids get enjoyment from sitting inside and playing video games.

For others, spending a day in the great outdoors is a fun way to pass the time.

That’s the case for numerous children who enjoy hunting with their families this time of year.

“I enjoy it,” 9-year-old Madison Newman, who bagged her first deer recently, said. “I think it’s fun to sit out there. Even if you don’t see any deer for awhile, it’s fun to watch the other animals like turkeys.”

For Madison, the thrill of taking her first deer was better than any video game she could be playing.

“After I pulled the trigger, I closed my eyes,” she said. “Then my dad told me I got it. I just started yelling ‘I got it! I got it!.’”

It was also a thrill for her dad, Chris, who had taken her hunting just once before.

“I got more excitement with her killing a little doe than if I had killed a 15-point buck,” he said. “It was a great experience.”

The experience was also nice for Robert Wilson, whose son Jacob recently took his first buck, a 9-point.

“It was a wonderful experience to see him kill his first buck,” Wilson said. “I haven’t been hunting for myself in a long time. I don’t even carry my own gun when we go, just his.”

While hunting with your child is fun, it should also be a time for safety as well.

“Safety is imperative when taking your child hunting,” Warren said. “One slip up and a child our you could lose a life. I taught (Madison) to never point a gun at anyone and always treat a gun like it’s loaded. We had also gone to the sheriff’s shooting range to allow her to get comfortable with the gun before we went on the hunt. ”

And now that Madison has bagged her first deer, she is ready to go for bigger and better things.

“I’m ready to get me another one,” she said. “After I got my first, I was like ‘OK, now I’m ready to go get some more.”
