Summitt — The Natchez Bulldogs soccer team picked up a big win over Wesson Friday night, as they overcame an early deficit to win 6-2.

Wesson jumped on top early when Blake Whittington put the ball in the back of the net just five minutes into the game to give the Cobras a 1-0 lead.

The lead wouldn’t last long as Kent Calvit took a pass from Ross Smith and scored just two minutes later.

In the 21st minute, Dustin Adams chipped a pass to Smith, who blasted it in the back of the net to give Natchez a lead, but Wesson would tie the score late in the first half on a penalty kick.

The second half was all Natchez, however, as the Bulldogs scored four unanswered goals to put it away.

The first came just three minutes into the second half as Calvit found Smith streaking down the middle. Smith collected the pass and fired it past the goal keeper for a 3-2 lead.

In the 18th minute, Smith returned the favor by assisting Calvit on a goal of his own, this one a header in the box.

The Calvit-Smith connection continued with Natchez’s next goal, a give and go to Smith, who blasted his third goal of the night past the Wesson keeper in the 21st minute.

Smith scored the final goal of the night later in the period on a spectacular side volley over the keepers head and under the bar off a nice feed from Calvit again..

“I was really pleased with our second half performance,” Natchez coach Dennis Hogue said. “Not so much because we scored but how we scored. ”

With the win, Natchez improved to 6-2-1 on the season. Their next game is an exhibition against Hogue’s team, the Natchez Gamblers.

The game will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. There will be free admission and the concession stand will be open.
