NATCHEZ — The Zeta Delta Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority hopes to raise $10,000 to help local students when they host the first Alpha Kappa Alpha Scholarship Golf Tournament at Duncan Park Golf Course Saturday.
The sorority is using the golf tournament as a fund-raiser for their scholarship program.
The sorority chapter annually gives a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving student from Adams, Claiborne, Jefferson and Wilkinson counties in Mississippi and Concordia and Catahoula parishes in Louisiana.
“We do a fund-raiser each year, but this is our first year to have a golf tournament,” Lillie Blackmon Sanders, one of the tournament organizers, said. “We hope to make this tournament an every-year event.”
There are currently 50 people signed up to play with 96 spots available.
Sanders said people who are interested in playing may sign up at the golf course Saturday morning between 7:30 and 9.
Breakfast will be served at that time with a shotgun start at 9.
“We’re very excited about the tournament,” Sanders said. “We’re looking forward to a fun time for all and hope to raise lots of money.”
Sanders said the group got the idea to put on a golf tournament fund-raiser because her husband Everett Sanders and several others within the organization are avid golfers.
“My sister’s chapter (of the sorority) in Houston does a golf tournament which is very successful,” Sanders said. So we thought with lots of golfers we have in town that it would be a good way to raise lots of money.”
There will be two flights of golfers with prizes being given to the winners of each flight.
There will also be door prizes given at the event.
Special guests will be the Alcorn State University golf team, which will be participating.
“This should be a great event and a fantastic fund-raiser,” Sanders said. “We’re hoping we’ll clear $10,000. If we make $10,000 we’ll be very happy.”
