NATCHEZ — Witnesses on the scene of a shooting Monday night said they heard between 10 and 12 gunshots that left one man dead.
Sheriff Ronny Brown would not release details or confirm the number of shots, but did say his deputies responded to a fatal shooting at Village Square Apartments after 7:30 p.m.
Though Brown would not release the name of the victim, sources said it was Ronald Jones, also known as Bo Diddley. Jones reportedly did not live at the apartment complex, but was visiting and was shot near his car.
Rumors circulating among the large crowd gathered at the scene Monday night said the victim was killed in a retaliatory shooting connected to an August shooting incident that left one dead.
Brown said he had heard the rumor, but did not know if there was any truth to it.
Later Monday night, deputies responded to a drive-by shooting in the Broadmoor area. No one was injured, but a house on Jason Court was hit, Brown said.
“We heard that it might be related, but we don’t have anything to prove it,” Brown said. “All our investigators are out trying to run down different things.”
Brown said his deputies heard four descriptions of cars for the drive-by shooting, but none of them were the same.
No arrests had been made in either incident as of 10:45 p.m. Monday, but Brown said deputies had brought in some people for questioning.
“We are trying to piece together stuff,” Brown said.
Natchez Police Department investigators are also involved in the case, Brown said.
Brown did not know the exact times of either shooting.
Coroner James Lee said he was not involved in the case and could not comment.
