Parents dropping children off at local schools this week may get a good lesson of their own.
As part of National Child Passenger Safety Week the Adams County Sheriff’s Office is visiting local elementary schools. Deputies will stop parents as they bring their children to school, inspect the car for proper restraints and offer advice for the future.
Deputies will not be issuing any tickets.
“This is about safety,” Deputy Chuck Latham said. “This is to help save somebody’s child’s life.”
Latham said children under the age of 12 should always ride in the backseat. Children under the age of 8 should be placed in booster seats, since seat belts are sized for adults.
Deputies who see parents driving in violation of any of these safety measures will take time to show them proper safety guidelines, Latham said.
Latham estimated that about 80 percent of the population drives in an unsafe manner.
“We are aware that the majority of fatalities and serious injuries during vehicle crashes can be greatly reduced with simply buckling up and using proper restraining of children,” Latham said.
