The Belhaven College football team made two additions to their defense as Forrest White and Jonathan Gamberi both signed letters of intent Monday morning at Cathedral High School.
White will join the Blazers’ defense as a safety while Gamberi will join the defensive line.
Belhaven head coach Don Lee said both White and Gamberi as blue-collar workers, and added that he looks forward to adding weight and speed to both and making them even better football players.
“We recruit talent, but more so we recruit character. These are young men of character,” he said. “These two are the type of athletes I am recruiting.”
The Blazers’ posted their second winning season in school history last year. He said character was responsible for those wins because of how it brings discipline and unity to a team.
Signing a college football scholarship is something White said he has wanted to do since the first grade.
“It feels pretty good, I feel like I am ready to go to work,” he said.
“It feels good having everybody behind me.”
White said he has an older brother who already attends college in Jackson and attended football camp at Belhaven last summer, and said he thinks he will feel right at home.
Signing a letter of intent to play college football has been a dream of Gamberi’s for the past four years.
“It’s a weight off my shoulders getting to go to college, and knowing I can play football,” he said.
Gamberi said he liked the teacher, student ratio at Belhaven along with the coaching staff. He said his parents have been behind him the whole time, and would like to thank the coaching staff at Cathedral for their support.
“I definitely wouldn’t have made it to be where I am with out my mom and dad,” White said. “I’ve got to thank the coaches for getting me to where I need to be.”
