Raccoon to blame for power outage

The culprit responsible for Sunday night’s electrical explosion didn’t mean any harm.
He was probably just exploring.
“A big raccoon bit the dust last night,” Entergy Customer Service representative Stephen Caruthers said Monday.
The creature somehow got through animal guards on a breaker at the Johns-Manville substation, grounded somewhere near 115,000 volts and set off a light show.
Residents in the area reported seeing a blue glow followed by sparks and flames that lasted approximately five minutes.
Some spectators thought an aircraft had crashed, others feared bombs were falling.
Three breakers supplying more than 2,500 Entergy customers went out, shutting off power from Liberty Road south down Seargent S. Prentiss Drive.
Power was restored to all customers by 11 p.m. Sunday, Caruthers said. But the fix is a temporary one.
Entergy crews from out-of-town came in Monday morning to begin repairing the damaged breakers. The men will work 16-hour days until the job is done, Caruthers said. The level of response is similar to one the company would implement in the case of a hurricane, he said.
Caruthers is hopeful work will be completed by Friday, and said the power should stay on while the crews work.
“We’ve got customers switched out of the ordinary,” he said. “Things are working, lights are on, but it’s because of the switching. That’s taken some of our safety net.”
Regular electric disturbances, like bad weather, could cause problems, he said.
The breaker damaged Sunday night was relatively new, Caruthers said.
The raccoon was found buried under debris.
