VIDALIA, La. — Vidalia junior Jarrett Hoffpauir struck out 12 batters over five innings, allowing one hit, and junior Ryan Boles hit two home runs as the Vikings blanked McCall 13-0 in the District 3-2A opener for both teams.
The contest was played under the threat of rain, which stopped 30 minutes before the opening pitch.
Hoffpauir allowed only a bloop single to Ronnie Perkins. He walkd three and had another batter reach on a fielder’s choice.
Hoffpauir picked off two of the four runners who reached base.
Hoffpauir struck out five of the last six batters he faced.
&uot;I was just trying to throw strikes,&uot;&160;Hoffpauir said. &uot;I think I was trying too hard at first, but I settled down. I knew we were going to get some runs, so I just had to do my job.&uot;
Hoffpauir improved to 4-0 on the mound.
&uot;I&160;needed the work on the mound,&uot;&160;he said. &uot;And it was good to get the win.&uot;
Vidalia managed only one hit over the first two innings, although McCall pitcher Courtney Davis walked four batters.
Boles walked his first time up and then hit a home run over the center field fence in his second at bat in the third inning.
The round tripper scored Matt Dillon, who had singled, and Kevin Laird, who reached on an error.
Boles’ second home run came in the 7-run fourth inning.
Hoffpauir and Adam Probst walked to lead off the order, Rod Donald doubled, Dillon singled, Lair walked and Colin Taunton singled.
Boles then hit another shot over the center field fence, striking the flag pole straight away from home plate.
&uot;They were both fastballs,&uot; Boles said of his first two home runs of the year. I knew we needed a hit.&uot;
Boles, who had three home runs last year, had never hit two homers in one contest.
&uot;I didn’t get the big head after the first one,&uot; he said. &uot;I just went up there to hit. That really helped my confidence.&uot;
Vidalia, which snapped a two-game losing streak with the win, scored a run in the first as Hoffpauir and Donald walked and pinch-runner Trey White scored on a wild pitch.
The Vikings put two runs on the board in the second as Laird singled, Boles walked, Terrell Williams reached on an error and Hoffpauir hit a sacrifice fly.
Vidalia plays at Ferriday Monday at 3:30 p.m.
