NHS powerlifters go to state meet

Four members of the Natchez High powerlifting squad advanced to the Class 5A State Powerlifting Meet at South State competition Saturday at Madison Central High in Jackson.
The top three finishers in each weight division advanced to the state competition.
Alonzo Green finished second in the 165-pound class with 985 points, squatting 345 pounds, benching 230 and deadlifting 410.
In the 181-division, Don Jackson placed third with 990 points, Jackson squatted 350, benched 225 and deadlifted 485.
Isreal Calvit finished second in the 220-division with 1,255 points. Calvit squateed 460, benched 310 and deadlifted 485.
Cordell Williams qualified with a third place in the 220-pound division. Williams totaled 1,124 points, squatting 375, benching 275 and deadlifting 475.
Jackson and Mealey both signed football scholarships with Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
Phillip Cook finished fifth in the 165-division.
&uot;I thought it went great,&uot; said Natchez High coach Joseph Johnson. &uot;We’ve got a young team and we’re looking forward to the state meet.&uot;
Johnson, who is in his first year as powerlifting coach at Natchez, missed three meets during the year after being hospitalized with pneumonia.
&uot;That kind of got the kids off track, but they turned the intensity up,&uot; Johnson said.
The Class 4A-5A Powerlifting State Meet to be held April 14-15 at Forest Hill in Jackson.
