I think that this is nice, maybe next year they could charge 1 canned good per child to donate to the stew pot or another charity. Have them use the canned good as a ticket to enter into the blocked off section. That way we teach the children that giving is as important as recieving.

On Should the city raise employee healthcare costs to balance the budget?

JustAPerson I understand what you are saying, but most city employees do not get raises like in private bussiness. After the minimum wage goes up I think that I will be making below it, and now my insurance is going up too! This is just too much! The city officials are just doing this to make up the difference for the "great recreation plan". Instead of cutting where they need to, they are hurting employees.

amanda I have made multiple atempts to give you information and to invite you down to the carriages. I even offered to pay your way ($15) of my money so that you could ride for free to feel more confortable about the treatment of the horses.I asked you to talk to a vet or other horse owners. If you refuse to accept the facts, there is nothing I can say to change your mind. Have you thought about the guys working in those same temps out in front of the hospital on the hwy. that seem to be doing fine? How about the dogs kept in pens in the sun at people's houses all over Natchez, even the humane society has them outside in the sun because it does not affect them like it does us. What about kids laying around swimming pools and playing ball in the heat of the day? Just this week I mowed grass, went fishing, worked hours in my garden and worked the horse carriages in this same heat and I still survived. Please atleast do some reading on horses, you may be surprised to find that these animals are just fine.
Here are a few things you should learn about horses. 1) Horses can drink up to ten gallons of water a day, which lets them go long periods of time with no water. The breed Akhal-Teke from Russia can go for days without water or food(2) It takes much more energy for a horse to lay down than to stand (3) horses are measured in hands(4 inches)
(4) Find out how to tell if a horse needs water, and whether the pinch method or the gum test is best. (5)Over grooming a horse will deplete the natural oils in its coat that help to keep your horse warm and dry.(6)signs that a horse is overheated, and why an anhydrotic horse is more at risk. You should also learn about founder, colic, monday morning disease, moon blindness and many other health issues related to horses. There are all kinds of web pages, magazines and books that give information on horses. Please educate yourself before making accusations.

Maybe we should do like the web site mississippibelieveit.com . It is really a neat way to promote an area. We could list all of the people, products, and cultural events with a twist. Take a look at the web site, it will make you proud. Articles and advertising like this would not only promote the miss-lou, it would also instill a local pride in the people of the area.

lost_in_kingston and allgood like I said before, please find out the facts then make a judgement. The sun rises in the east, behind the depot. The depot has an overhang that protects the horses for the majority of the day from the sun. At about 2 the sun begins moving past the overhang. The horses are in the sun for two hours then we have shift change. The night horses come out to replace the day shift, and they are in the sun for about 3 hours. At about 7 the sun starts to set behind the old carpet sales building and the horses are no longer in the direct sun. Also we cannot just change the exterior appearance of a historic building in Natchez that is privately owned by someone other than us. If you drive by the depot look at the overhang on the building (canal st side) and you will see what I am talking about. A few years back we were offered a spot at the visitors center. We decided that even though we would probally double our business, it would not provide the protection from the elements like the depot does. You may not think of these things as you pass by, but I assure you that a many of slow days have provided us with the time to think about these issues over the years. Everything no matter how simple to you has a lot of thought and reason behind it.

ntzmsguy have you actually been by the depot? The only time that they are not in the shade is after 2 and the shift change is at 4. These horses are not mistreated and I am offended because I have seen the owners sit up all night with a sick horse. I have seen these horses brought to LSU vets when they were sick. I have been there when these horses had two options 1) be bought as a carriage horse or 2) be slaughtered. I think that every one of our horses are really happy with our decision. ntzmsguy how exactly would you feel if someone came out and accused you of abuse or neglect without ANY facts. This is not only wrong by me, it is against the law.
