May God bless and be with you Sheriff Angie. You are definitely a lady with the right priorities. My prayers will be with you as you take time to recover from the loss of your husband and sister. I know where you're coming from, been there myself. As for the new sheriff....Adams County can't go wrong with Chuck Mayfield. He is a good man with family values, experienced, with no prejudices.

Mr. David Gardner is a professional. He does a great job and is a dedicated and sincere man. I am surprised he has stayed in Natchez this long, considering the bad element he has had to work with.

Ms. Mathis, you need to take a good, long look at yourself. Your actions have become an embarrassment to every citizen of Natchez. You are a self-serving tyrant, and a bully. The people of this town are sick of your foolish antics. What a zoo! Get with the program people, there will be another election one day, and you bad eggs... will certainly be put in the road. Not soon enough...

And we wonder why Natchez is failing...

I grew up on Kingston Road and have lived most of my life there. It was common for us to hear panther (cougar) calls at night, a very eerie sound, much like a woman's scream. They always seemed to prowl the creek banks, and moved mostly at night. As a kid the screams scared me to death. I have observed several panthers passing through our wooded backyard through the years. What we think was a panther, actually rushed by my husband, brushing against his legs on a dark night when he went out to feed his hunting dogs. Needless to say, my husband came running in the house, slammed the door and locked it all in one motion!

Our sightings were always at night, and the cats were black in color. We did see observe a huge brown panther that was killed by a nearby neighbor a good many years ago. I believe there was an article and photo in the Natchez Democrat about that one. I have no idea why the man shot it, seems like it was stalking his chickens, maybe not. I know that he called a game warden to report it.

According to internet information, panthers are also called cougars.

At any rate, I've never known these cats to bother humans. As long as they aren't causing us problems, I say just let them live in peace.

The Board of Supervisors made the right decision. Appointing the wife of a deceased official is customary, not only in Mississippi but in other states as well. There is a valid reason for this. Appointing Angie Brown as interim sheriff will allow business to continue as usual, and also allow the very efficient staff of Ronny Brown to continue it's work until a proper election can be set. I am sure Ronny would agree 100%. Settle down folks, things will be just fine. I have no doubt.

Ms. Brown, I am sorry for your loss. I have every confidence you will do a good job for Natchez.

My husband and I visited the Natchez Visitors Center once. There was a charge to see the promotional movie about Natchez, so we skipped it. What a farce! Never asked to pay in any other state we have visited. Also, not an employee to be found there to ask about local interests, restaurants, etc....a literal ghost town. Most welcome centers offer soft drinks and coffee to visitors...not there. Nothing but bare cold walls and numerous brochure counters. I am sure the Park Service would do a much better job. Might be best to get rid of the current staff and let the Park Service start anew. Just my thoughts of course!
