Oxgyen tank explodes from cigarette smoking
Published Wednesday, July 23, 2008
VIDALIA — Emergency officials responded to an oxygen tank explosion on Ralph Road Tuesday.
The explosion was the result of the victim smoking a cigarette too closely to the oxygen tank, Concordia Fire District No. 2 officials said.
The victim received burns on her arms, legs and face, and was transported to Natchez Community Hospital for treatment, officials said.

One of the first things a patient is given when they need home oxygen is instructions on its use. Included in that information is the fact that IT IS FLAMMABLE. They also receive a sign that says 'do not smoke, oxygen in use'. It is sad that this woman ignored the instructions. I hope she recovers quickly from her injuries and she thinks before lighting anything close to an O2 tank again.

I've seen smokers rolling oxygen tanks behind them, hacking and coughing with every breath. I guess some people will smoke till they gasp their last breath.
I need to quit smoking. I don't want to be on oxygen, rolling that thing behind me everywhere I go. My biggest fear is not being able to breathe.
I sure hope this lady is going to be OK. Her life was spared for a reason.

I would like for someone to tell me how is oxygen flammable. Oxygen is what we breathe. Oxygen makes fire burn at a rapid pace, the oxygen doesn't actually burn.

Its so sad. My father in law just passed last month. God rest his soul. He too was a heavy smoker. He stopped his main artery completely up and it caused him to have dementia. The Dr told him that if he didnt STOP smoking, he would surely die! He looked at us and said, ok... Give me a cigarette! it was just sad that he loved the cigarette more than he loved living and seeing his 5 grandchildren grow up! Cancer took him from us last month. His tumor was from his airway (in his throat) into his lung, the size of a grapefruit.!! We miss him so much! Im so sad that he will not see his Granddaughters walk down the aisle or hold his great grandchildren the way I always hoped he would. He was a wonderful man! He just had a bad addiction.
I PRAY that the lady will be ok and I pray that she will give the cigarettes up before its too late! God bless you ALL!

If you don't smoke, be thankful. You should not be so self-righteous in your criticisms of those who smoke. Everyone has a weakness. While some of us sit and criticize those whose weakness happens to be smoking, we are dying in our own but are too blind to see. Many of these started smoking many years ago before it was cool NOT to smoke. The addiction is often hard to overcome. So give them a break.

I work in a healthcare field especially with pulmonary patients. This type of scenario happens more than you would think. Patients who require home O2 are coninually reminded that it is not safe to use there O2 tanks near any source of flame. However, some people have to find out for themselves. By the way OXYGEN is NOT flammable but it does SUPPORT COBUSTION.

"...And even though oxygen doesn't burn, it supports combustion. A material, such as the metal in oxygen regulators or cylinders, that will not burn in air (which is only 21 percent oxygen) may burn in the presence of pure, high-pressure oxygen. "
From: http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2000/40...
Our atmosphere is primarily Nitrogen not Oxygen and the "pure oxygen" in those tanks are pressurized which will make anything burn hotter, faster.

When I worked at Community Hospital many years ago, it was astounding to me to see the nurses, doctors, and even the respiratory therapists taking smoke breaks. It seemed like everyone of them smoked.

hossfly, thank you so very much for your (ignored comments by hoity-toity, snobish, holier-than-thou non-smoking eartly saints who are perfect). I have known people to condemn me for smoking, yet they could not tell the truth if their life depended on it, some who would steal anything not nailed down, if you didn't keep your eyes on them, strangers walking pass me would say that's bad for you, it will kill you. Well it's for sure I'm gonna die, so that ain't no news to me. Those people are the ones driving the big gas guzzlers that fill our air with smog that will surely kill anybody whether they smoke or not. It's very refreshing to know someone stands up for us smokers, who pay a heck of a lot more taxes than they do. Thanks again and have a wonderful life.

oops destiny! Sorry if someone struck a nerve. I will defend your right to smoke, I was raised in a home with parents who smoked, my husband smoked when we first met, and my son and son-in-law both smoke. But for some reason I never felt the urge to try one - lucky for me I guess. I have seen what smoking can do to people, and that I hate. But I have to admit, my mother smoked for 52 years and quit when she was 71, then lived for 10 more years and never had a problem associated with smoking. My dad died of a heart attack, but whether that was caused by his smoking, we don't know. I know many people who don't smoke who have had heart attacks. So if you enjoy it, do it. But please not when I'm around. Thanks.

"HorseFly"--I never said I was perfect. I am definitely not looking for sainthood.
But I am not DUMB enough to light up around anything flammable or combustible.
I guess you must be related to the person who almost blew themselves up, because you are very testy about this.
But if you are of the same family tree, well then i don't take much stock in what you have to say or what you think of me.

Did anyone notice the misspelling of "OXYGEN" in the headline?
Posted by dangyankee (anonymous) on July 24, 2008 at 12:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)
It was kind of hard to miss, sammohon, but that one looked more like a "mere" typo to me than an actual spelling error. I'm a spelling Nazi, but also make my fair share of typos (difference between me and the ND is that I almost always catch them. Almost).
With regard to the story, I can only pray that a rattlesnake or heart attack gets me before I wind up on oxygen, myself, because I would surely be one of those morons who smoke while lugging the ol' O2 tank around, and I really have no desire to be cremated BEFORE I pass to the proverbial "other side."
