Sallie Junkin Ballard received the Historical Preservation Award from the Natchez Historical Society for her work in a Historical Beautification Preservation Project. She is pictured with Clinton Bagley who presented a proclamation from Gov. Haley Barbour recognizing Ballard’s efforts in the area of historical beautification. Crape myrtles have been part of the Natchez scene since the late 1700s. There is a record of a Yankee soldier writing home to family in Ohio in 1863 wherein he describes the crape myrtle trees in Mr. Surget’s garden. Ballard purchased 2000 crape myrtle trees in the year 2000. She distributed the trees to many groups who cooperated with her in planting the trees.
