Katherine Christine Tumminello, standing sixth from left, of Natchez has been inducted into Millsaps College’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honor society. The chemistry major was one of 20 seniors inducted in the April 26 ceremony on the Millsaps campus in Jackson. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Sam C. Tumminello. Since 1989, Millsaps College has been home to Alpha of Mississippi, the state’s original Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Election to Phi Beta Kappa is one of the highest honors an undergraduate can attain. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has chapters at 276 colleges and universities, and more than 500,000 members. The society’s mission is to champion education in the liberal arts and sciences, to recognize academic excellence and to foster freedom of thought and expression.
