The Vidalia Lower Elementary second-grade classes recently studied the different landforms and were assigned the task of creating one, with the help of their parents. Sen. Kelvin Butler has awarded three $500 college scholarships to District 38 students. The scholarships were given on Sept. 27 to Jonathan Buggage of Pike County, Tiarra Johnson of Amite County and Jacqueline Stewart of Wilkinson County. Johnson and Stewart are attending Alcorn State University and Buggage is attending Southwest Mississippi Community College. It marked the fifth year that Butler, chairman of the Senate Local and Private Committee, has assisted incoming freshmen in furthering their education. Brittany Ann McCalip, a student at Trinity Episcopal Day School, was selected by The Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District to attend the Warren A. Hood Natural Resources Camp at Hinds Community College in Raymond. While attending camp, youth are educated about natural resources. McCalip was also chosen to receive The Mississippi Association of Conservation District’s Endowment Fund $2,000 scholarship at the closing banquet. Sallie Junkin Ballard received the Historical Preservation Award from the Natchez Historical Society for her work in a Historical Beautification Preservation Project. She is pictured with Clinton Bagley who presented a proclamation from Gov. Haley Barbour recognizing Ballard’s efforts in the area of historical beautification. Crape myrtles have been part of the Natchez scene since the late 1700s. There is a record of a Yankee soldier writing home to family in Ohio in 1863 wherein he describes the crape myrtle trees in Mr. Surget’s garden. Ballard purchased 2000 crape myrtle trees in the year 2000. She distributed the trees to many groups who cooperated with her in planting the trees. View photo »

The second-grade students in Racheal Sutherland’s class at Vidalia Lower Elementary are doing their part to save the environment. For an assignment the students were given a home recycle project. Their task was to create something unique by using recyclable materials that could be found within their own homes. The children were encouraged to use their imaginations to create these projects. The project was an extension of a week-long social studies lesson on the need for recycling in our country. Each child was allowed to tell what recycled materials were used and explain how the new creative project would be used. Some of the projects in Sutherland’s class included a robot made from aluminum foil and boxes, a car made from an empty plastic container, a snowman figure made from old newspaper, and a homemade lava lamp made from an empty bottle. Butler presented the $500 cash scholarships on Sunday, Nov. 2 to Naketta Veals of Gloster and Natasha Seaberry of Centreville, both 18, at Gloster Elementary School. Butler, chairman of the Senate’s Local and Private Committee, said he was committed to helping every young person who wanted to attend an institution of higher learning have the opportunity to do so. The scholarship gives Butler the chance to continue contributing to the community when the senate is out of session. Students who have lived in Adams, Amite, Pike, Walthall and Wilkinson counties for at least one year are eligible. Recipients are chosen based upon academic achievements and individual financial needs. The story was about a Hedgehog, Rabbit, Owl and Squirrel trying to bake a cake without reading the directions, but the cake did not come out right. So Hedgehog locked everyone else out of the house and started over. He then read the recipe. This story gives the students a great example of following directions when baking and cooking. Lynda Williams took her class on a trip to our cafeteria on Oct. 22. There were three groups. One group baked cup cakes while the other two groups baked a cake and brownies. It was a great experience for the students. They all enjoyed their delicious treats. The Beta Club at Robert Lewis Middle School presented the Natchez Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross with a check for their Disaster Relief Fund. The members also collected old cell phones for ReCellular, Inc. For every phone collected, ReCellular will donate $1 to the American Red Cross. Katherine Christine Tumminello, standing sixth from left, of Natchez has been inducted into Millsaps College’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honor society. The chemistry major was one of 20 seniors inducted in the April 26 ceremony on the Millsaps campus in Jackson. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Sam C. Tumminello. Since 1989, Millsaps College has been home to Alpha of Mississippi, the state’s original Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Election to Phi Beta Kappa is one of the highest honors an undergraduate can attain. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has chapters at 276 colleges and universities, and more than 500,000 members. Cathedral High School’s AP English Literature class recently attended the Shakespeare Festival at Tulane University in New Orleans and viewed the stage production of “The Taming of the Shrew,” performed by members of the Actors’ Equity Association and Union of Professional Actors, joined by an undergraduate and a graduate Tulane theatre student. Following the production, which incorporated authentic Shakespearean text set in 1950s Italian New Orleans, students participated in an at-large Q&A session with the actors, followed by a one-on-one session with actors and Director Ron Gural. Patricia Wiley’s students at Ferriday Lower Elementary enjoy work stations daily. “Every child cannot learn in the same way,” Wiley said. “With differentiated instruction, the children have a much better chance for success. They utilized numerous centers, such as: computer, reading, writing, art and listening center. My students care about learning and they care about achieving on and beyond their intellectual ability.” The students studied high frequency word cards, and the teacher and students read aloud the story, “Where Do Pigs Play?” The teacher discussed the question mark at the end of the title. The students chorally read the title and each student was required to participate and read a passage aloud. Some students built new words with –ig and –it families. “The students moved from center to center with little or no loss of class time. Work stations are routine procedures for my students. For the 20th year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geography Bee for students in the fourth- through eighth-grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world. The winner of the Cathedral School Geography Bee will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination to determine state competitors. All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship, at the national competition May 20 and 21, 2008, in Washington, D.C. The Rho Epsilon Lambda Foundation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is proud to acknowledge the 2007 recipients of the Dr. James R. Todd Scholarship. Since its inception in 2005, the foundation has issued 12 scholarships to deserving high school seniors upon their graduation to attend college. These students are among the best and the brightest of the Miss-Lou and represent Adams, Jefferson and Wilkinson counties as well as Concordia Parish. On Saturday, the foundation will host the bi-annual James R. Todd Scholarship Banquet at the Natchez Convention Center. The funds generated from this black-tie affair are utilized in support of the scholarship fund. The foundation has committed itself to distribute $4,000 annually to deserving applicants from our community. Boy Scout Troop 158, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, recently had a Court of Honor ceremony. Nineteen scouts were presented with 81 merit badges and rank advancements. Nolan Voss, Braxton McKay, Brandon Sandifer, Nicholas Arnold, Chaz Jackson and Thomas Garrity earned the Tenderfoot Rank. Chase Patrick, William Butler and Josh Callaway earned the Star Rank. Elliott McCann and Derrick Garrity earned the Life Rank. The troop meets on Wednesday nights at 7:30 at the Scout Hall next to the Knights of Columbus building in Natchez. On Aug. 17 and 18, Mr. J. Myles Sr., gospel music director for Alcorn State University’s WPRL 91.7 FM “THE GOLD,” took part in the Nashville Gospel Showcase, Nashville’s premier gospel music show. Nashville Gospel Showcase features new gospel artists from across the southeast region. The initial Nashville Gospel Showcase featured gospel music artists in a concert performance before a live, studio audience in scenic Livingston, Tenn. The line-up of artists included singers from the states of Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee. Nashville Gospel, established over 25 years ago, links gospel music artists with audiences across the nation airing in multiple television markets including Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Michigan, South Carolina, the U.S. Virgin Islands and others. AARP Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service, recently awarded the George W. Armstrong Library a certificate of dedication and appreciation for their partnership. The George W. Armstrong Library has provided a location site for the Mississippi AARP Tax-Aide Program for over 10 years. During the 2006 tax preparation season, a total of 511 individuals were provided tax assistance. “The AARP Tax-Aide Program is a wonderful resource for the taxpayer,” District Coordinator William Parker said. “AARP Tax-Aide volunteers get a great deal of satisfaction from helping people deal with the challenges of preparing their tax forms. If you want to help yourself and others with their tax returns, this is the program for you. As always, we need individuals who have good computer skills to assist with electronic filing.” AARP Tax-Aide is administered through the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. Chase Caldwell, left, and Landon Henry, right, were recently presented with scholarship checks from the Natchez Little Theatre Dawn Taylor Memorial Scholarship. The locals students are pictured receiving their scholarhip checks from Natchez Little Theatre Executive & Artistic Director Layne Taylor. Chase Caldwell, the son of Gary and Mary Ruth Caldwell of Vidalia, is a recent graduate of Cathedral High School and an Eagle Scout. He won the first $500 Dawn Taylor Memorial Scholarship in 2005 for his extensive work as a volunteer at Natchez Little Theatre since the age of 10. He has performed in numerous roles at NLT and won the first best youth actor award for his portrayal of Emery McDougal in “Auntie Mame” in 2005 and won again in 2006 for Huckleberry Finn in the musical, “Big River.” Chase will be attending Mississippi College in Clinton this fall. Landon Henry, 19, is the son of La Ne’ Zucarro and Eddie Ray Henry of Natchez. A 2007 graduate of Cathedral High School and an Eagle Scout, Landon won the $500 Dawn Taylor Memorial Scholarship for the past two years at NLT for his volunteer work at the theatre. Landon has performed and worked on over 20 productions at Natchez Little Theatre since 2005, winning best supporting actor in 2006 for George Holly in “Suddenly Last Summer,” and best actor in a play for Jonathan Douglas in “Southern Exposure” in 2007. Landon is using his scholarship to attend Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Natchez before to pursuing a degree in theatre. The Dawn Taylor Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually at the Natchez Little Theatre’s Stan Dean Ovation Awards for the Youth Volunteer of the Year. The scholarship is held until the winner has graduated from high school and is presented to the college where the winner has been accepted to help defray tuition costs. The scholarship is named for Dawn Taylor, who was very active as a volunteer at Natchez Little Theatre and in numerous organizations throughout Natchez and Mississippi. Dawn was a retired teacher and performer, and her background is in theatre, opera, music and education were renowned throughout the state of Mississippi. View photo »

Natchez Regional Medical Center’s CEO Jeffrey Wesselman and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Dan Bland recently presented a check for $10,000 to Natchez Trails consultant Sandy Middleton and Natchez City Engineer David Gardner to assist in reaching the required local match of $500,000. The hospital and the trails have also formed a partnership for HealthQuest, the fitness-focused incentive program designed by NRMC to promote physical fitness in Natchez and the surrounding area. Hospital officials joined the effort to fund the Trails in its early stages and are excited about the potential health benefits the development offers the community. View photo »

Grace United Methodist Church took children on a wild ride through God’s word at this year’s vacation Bible school. Each day at the Avalanche Ranch, the children came to a dude ranch setting and learned about God through their Bible buddies: Buc, Shadow, Ranger, Skye and Boss. They also enjoyed crafts, Chadder’s Adventure Theater and Bible adventures. On the first day the children learned that God is real with a visit from a real cowboy. David Carter and his trick horse Cash demonstrated stunts and tricks on the church’s front lawn. Visiting children from Grace’s Child Development Center and Crosspoint Church have joined in the stampede. The week was filled with excitement, fun and adventure for all. View photo »
Marlana Godfrey, 20, recently cut 10 inches of her hair for Locks of Love for the third time. She first had 10 inches cut when she was 17, then again when she was 19. The donations will be used to create wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments. View photo »
