LORMAN — Alcorn State head football coach Melvin Spears has hired 2002 Alcorn State graduate Louis Green as the linebacker and special teams coach.

Green played for Alcorn coach Johnny Thomas from 1998-2002 as a linebacker. He played high school football at Jefferson County High and lettered in track and field and basketball as well.

After finishing at Alcorn, he played in the National Football League for the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos. He was with the Broncos from 2004-2009 when he was a linebacker and also played on special teams. He won the Ed Black Courage Award while with the Broncos and was in the National Youth Program at Alcorn for four years

Green graduated with a degree from ASU in industrial technology and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in guidance education and expects to complete his master’s this year.

He coached at Jefferson County High last season , directing the linebackers and special teams.

“It is a great opportunity for me to be back at my alma mater to turn the program into a championship one,” Green said. “It is especially great to get the chance to work with coach Spears and it is such an honor to be back where I played my college ball. This is the dream job for me.”

Spears said Green has the experience in dealing with linebackers and coaching special teams that he was looking for.

“He played both positions on the highest level, the NFL,” Spears said. “He is young and smart, and I am sure that he will instill pride on the specialty teams and linebacking corps.”

Green is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Green Sr., and his mother, Mrs. Mary Alice Green. He is the father of Landon Green.

Spears also said Vyron Brown, recently tabbed by Spears as the Braves’ new offensive coordinator, has left Alcorn and will be returning to Grambling State to be with newly named coach Doug Williams.

Right now, Spears said he may perform offensive coordinator duties himself, as he did while coaching at Grambling. He was offensive coordinator at Alabama State last season, helping them to win the Eastern Division in the SWAC and playing in the conference championship game.

Spears said his other option would be to train quarterbacks coach Bruce Eugene for that position.
