Arlington owner misses deadline

Published Saturday, January 23, 2010

NATCHEZ — The deadline has long passed for Arlington owner Dr. Thomas Vaughan to remove 10 inoperable vehicles from his property.

City Building Inspector Paul Dawes said Friday Vaughan had until a Jan. 8 court-ordered deadline to remove the vehicles, which had all been vandalized.

“We have since gotten bids to remove those vehicles,” Dawes said.

The City of Natchez has awarded a $3,850 contract to Natchez Salvage & Parts to clean off the lot. Dawes said work is set to begin next week, and Vaughan will foot the bill.

“(Vaughan) will also have to pay to capture his vehicles back and take them where he wishes outside the city,” Dawes said.

The city public works department was at work last month clearing the property. According to a disposition order drafted by Municipal Judge Jim Blough, all work, materials and labor required to rescue Arlington will be placed in a lien against the property.

Vaughan, who was found guilty of demolition by neglect and abandonment of motor vehicles, has been ordered to pay $551 in court fines. Payment was due Jan. 6, but Dawes said he was not certain if Vaughan paid the fines.

Repeated attempts to contact Blough Friday were unsuccessful.

According to the disposition order, efforts to impede or obstruct the order are punishable as contempt of court.

I will this agency some legitimacy when they force the owner of the building on the corner of South Canal and Green Street to tear down that building. Thats the building that has a fork lift parked in front of it for about a week. Just behind that building it looks like an old store. That property looks worse than Arlington. Enough said.

Here we go again! Why don't they just leave him alone! Natchez is neglecting to fix some of its streets, is someone gonna come in and take Natchez?

How about that old laundry building on Hommichitto
Street??? You round the corner and there it sits a
two story eyesore with a big hole in the middle of
it!! I think its been that way for 20 years or more!!
If you lean on the Arlington owner why not lean on its'
owner just as hard???

Sailaway2. The city knows that the Arlington property is worth a lot of money and they want to take it. They can't wait to get their grubby little hands on it. That's why they want to rip Dr Vaughn to shreds over a building that is not even visible from the street. The other real eyesores are not worth as much, so they are not in such a hurry to steal them.

When's the next voting day? Get all these birds outta there. If they do it to Vaughn, then you're next.

I go by Arlington almost every day and I strain to see those "vehicles." You can't even see them from the street. What's the big deal if he wants to keep equipment in his yard? It's his yard and if someone gets hurt she/he can sue him, but that's about it. How can you demand someone to take something from his own yard that cannot be seen from the street? Please explain this to me.

if you abandon your property and it deteriorates, whether antebellum or not, it should be taken for the cost of upkeep. Especially within city limits. Pay the cost, get it back. Simple.

you're next....? please..... stop.

This long-running story and the many comments illustrate that there's no cure for stupid.

Ben Colder I thank you for your comment.

Sounds like the city of Natchez is going to be guilty of theft for taking the man's personal property. They are already guilty of tresspassing to see what they can get there hands on! Next when they add up enough money against him they will take the house . Who's going to be next in Nazi Natchez .....Maybe you!
If they don't like you or want what you have they're going to take it. The more obvious eyesores on Canal street are already owned by the government or arent worth having. How do I get on board with this taking of other peoples property sounds like a good plan..........It seems to work in Natchez...............

That question is easy Natchezbear. Just pay the unpaid taxes for three years. Then file a quitclain and the property is assigned over to you.

ok here we go again...natchez city "officials". i would like to start by saying that THIS IS THOMAS VAUGHNS PROPERTY. PERIOD. i can tell you several problems in natchez that are for more important than worrying about freakin vehicles sitting on a mans personal property that has been in his family for the past 4 or 5 generations....the vehicles cannot be seen from the road (i have looked) and are not an eye sore for the area, unless you tresspass on his property and make them an eyesore for yourself???. as i drive thru downtown natchez there are several houses/buildings on very small pieces of property that are completely visible to passerbys that are a major eye sore. also there are railroad tracks on canal street that have caused teenagers to be seriously injured along with several other accidents at the same location. why is it that the arlington situation is a hurried thing to be cleaned up when its not causing deaths but the tracks where people are injured remain a life threatning hazard and repairs have been put off for a couple of months??? HELLO! natchez has far more problems to worry about than a few abandoned vehicles sitting on private property i will tell you. also i would like to mention the "officials" we have in offices here in the city of natchez that are crooks and take it among themselves to commit illegal actions to gain for themselves... whats going to be done about that? i think us natchez people need to pay more attention to whats going on with our city officials behind their desks/ behind our backs....im sure glad this was caught. GREEDY PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! greediness gets you no where!

I think wonderinmiss, that the city's problem is that he hasn't attempted to shore it up and stablize it, and it remains unsafe, especially to noisy trespassers, kids, and vagrants.

(just saw the following on the internet - Jon)

BOOMBOX PLAGUE

Here's how to end the noisy boombox plague:
Ask some poor wretch if he'd like to have a ten- or twenty-dollar bill. If his answer is Yes, tell him about your noisy boombox neighbor and then say:
"The money is yours if you can figure out something so I won't have to hear that guy's boombox again. Don't kill him or beat him up. But do whatever you have to do to silence that Hollywoodized lowlife!"
Believe me, this is VERY effective. Heard of the VAB's? They're the "Vigilantes Against Boomboxes." Or you can start your own vigilante group.
Reactions, anyone?
