Ferriday’s DeVonante Scott is tripped up by Wossman’s Jones Christopher Friday night.

Fourth quarter rally propels Ferriday to win

Published Saturday, September 26, 2009

FERRIDAY — Once again the Ferriday Trojans had to rally in the second half to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. This time it was at their homecoming game as they defeated the Wossman Wildcats 16-10 Friday night.

“Defense kept us in the game. We kept their big (running) back from getting going. He had one run of about 30 yards where he got loose. It was a total team effort by the defense. Marques Lewis put us on his shoulders,” Ferriday head coach Freddie Harrison said.

Ferriday (3-1) trailed Class 4A Wossman 10-0 at the end of the third quarter. Then Trojans quarterback Rodney Lawson took over in the fourth quarter.

First he scored on a 1-yard run on a quarterback sneak and his two-point conversion pass to Alfred Brown cut the Wildcats’ lead to 10-8. Then the Trojans’ defense held and gave the offense one more opportunity to win the ball game.

With just 2:43 remaining in the ball game, Lawson threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to DeVonante Scott. Bobby Madison ran in for the two-point conversion and Ferriday escaped with the win.

But the way Ferriday played throughout the first three quarters, it didn’t look like a comeback would be in the offering.

“We could never get started. We had five turnovers,” Harrison said. “Finally in the fourth we got started.”

Ferriday has made a major turn-around. Especially after a close 12-6 contest with Natchez. I expected a much bigger score in that one (like 56-6) or something. Good job Trojans.
