Ferriday’s Bobby Madison evades Vidalia defender Dee Fleming Friday night during the Trojans’ 34-24 win over the Vikings.

Ferriday takes 10-point win over rival Vikings

Published Saturday, September 19, 2009

VIDALIA — As Vidalia High School’s Quan Riley was taken to the ambulance on a stretcher, he raised a fist in the air to ignite the Vikings’ home crowd in its game against Ferriday High School Friday, but it just wasn’t enough.

Riley, who went down with 6:44 left in the fourth quarter, was inspirational, but his team simply didn’t have the needed energy left and lost 34-24.

Riley’s neck injury after a fumble on the 37-yard line led to a roughly 15-minute delay, and Riley was eventually taken to Natchez Regional Medical Center for precautionary reasons.

The Vikings couldn’t muster another scoring drive, as Ferriday won to go 2-1 on the season.

Gary Parnham Jr., who was acting head coach for the Vikings with Dee Faircloth out sick, said Riley’s injury actually happened a play before the fumble.

“He had tingling in his legs,” Parnham said. “The blow happened a play before (when) he got elbowed in the back of the neck. Unfortunately, I didn’t know his neck was hurting him.

“When he went down, he jarred it. I’m hoping it’s just precautionary, and that’s what we’re being told.”

Vidalia was only down 28-24 going into the fourth quarter, but a 40-yard touchdown catch by the Trojans’ Alfred Brown gave them a 10-point lead and put the game out of reach.

Ferriday began the second half trailing 18-8, but a quick 20 points erased the deficit and put the Trojans in the driver’s seat.

With 10:16 to go in the third, Ferriday’s DeVante Scott returned a Vidalia punt 74 yards for a touchdown. The Trojans scored again on a Bobby Madison 81-yard carry and a 19-yard touchdown run by Scott.

Vidalia managed just one touchdown in the second half, a 14-yard catch by Gary Stewart with 42 seconds left in the third quarter.

Ferriday was tormented by penalties throughout the game. The Trojans were penalized 15 times for minus 150 yards. Nine of those penalties came in the first half, for minus 90 yards.

Ferriday head coach Freddie Harrison said he was not pleased with his team’s performance, despite the win.

“I really think that our team didn’t show up tonight to play,” Harrison said. “(It was) a really, really, really poor effort from both our offense and our defense.”

Harrison also said the Trojans picked up the pace in the second quarter only after seeing that they needed to get their heads in the game.

“They realized that they had to play football,” Harrison said. “They had been sleepwalking for two quarters and finally realized that they were getting their butt whipped.”

Ferriday scored first on a 14-yard touchdown run by Scott with 5:09 left in the first quarter, but didn’t score again in the first half.

Vidalia’s first touchdown came on a 60-yard catch by Tri McCoy with 3:54 left in the first.

The second quarter was all Vidalia, with a 19-yard touchdown catch by Riley and a 10-yard touchdown reception by McCoy.

Despite the loss, Parnham said he was proud that his team didn’t quit after the first Ferriday touchdown, and thinks conditioning finally caught up with the Vikings in the second half.

“The first two games we played we kind of folded up after some adversity,” Parnham said. “This team didn’t fold tonight, and that’s what makes me the proudest.

“We’re not done for this season, I can tell you that. We’ve got district (play) coming (next Friday), and we’re coming after every district team we play.

Excuse me but the officiating was the same on both sides of the field. If not Vidalia would have won. And it is a shame that when the game did not go in Ferriday's favor that they have to play dirty. It was a hard played game on both sides of the field. Quan you played a hard game and you still walked out of the hospital like a soldier. Keep your head up and the Vikings played a good game. OOHHHH Vidalia

I agree Ferriday always have bad attitudes when things don't go their way and have to play very dirty ball and not calling out the numbers but yes yall did what yall wanted to do but guess what Quan came out and yes he will show out again. You Go Quan and the whole Viking team. The band was G-R-E-A-T!!!!!!!!!!!! Even though the time ran out due to the officials once again. Ferriday band was good also. Everybody just keep your head up and keep working hard, CAUSE " your fans", are behind you all the way. OHHHH Vidalia WAT???

QUAN TAPPED OUT !

Excuse me llena304 and Greenfields but you are sadly mistaken. I think we played a really good game of ball and unfortunately, yes the team did have to play against the refs and the team. It was amazing how that one ref saw all those penalties on the Trojans but missed a bunch of the same penalties that the Vikings made. I saw several times where they showed unsportsman-like conduct after they got behind. I only remember about 1 or 2 penalties being called against them. Each time the Vikings reached a 3rd down it was amazing how the ref found a penalty that would give them just enough yards for another 1st down. Ferriday never had that liberty. We had to play hard for every yard we made. I'm sorry that a young man ended up getting hurt and I do pray that he is much better and able to get back into the next game but unfortunately that's part of the game. It was not dirty ball playing that made that happen to him, he was hurt to begin with and didn't say anything about it which made a bad situation worse. I think that both bands were pretty good but I want to add that the Vidalia Band or shall I say the drummajor, who is supposed to be the leader and set an example for the band, was very rude and disrespectful. He was starting making bad jestures and doing things while the band was passing. The other members of the band just stood there but he didn't. He was a long-time member of the Trojans and now because he has moved he feels the need to do these type things. Not only that but a lot of the things that the drum section played were things that our band played while he was here. Needless to say I felt like I was in the middle of another Bring It On movie since they used just about all of our caters and a lot of our stadium music. Way to go Tre!! Let's see how well you can keep up because we're coming better and stronger!!

First I would like to say thanks to everyone for their prayers, calls and concerns for Quan he is doing much better. And no he wasnt hurt before he got hit while he was down. And yes fonkytowngirl it was dirty ball that injured him know your facts before you comment and for you Cyobtaf thanks for your comment thats just what his attorny has been waiting on, one of yal smart trojans to make that statement along with the messages that yal sent. His family has enough to go on with what they have to do. And if intenionally hurting someone is not unsportsmanlike i dont know what is.

Let me start off by saying that this was one of the worst officiated games on both parts. About the kids playing dirty I saw two team out there doing what the adults of this parish has being doing to one another for a long time (enough said). The young man that got hurt was not hit in a dirty way nor was it a late or an illegal hit. It was in between the whistle and it wasn’t even a hard hit. He fumbled the football at an important time of the game then he was hurt. Don’t get me wrong not saying that he wasn’t hurt or that he was faking just stating the facts. As far as the bands go the Viking band was by far better than then the Trojan band. Better variety of songs and more energy. Hope I don’t get in trouble by what I say on a newspaper blog. LMBO!!!!!!!!!!

I'm done. I will not stoop to your level anymore, because I have already let satan win commenting on the insensitive things that you say. I know that someone truly blessed and church going would not say things like that so have your way. I'm done. !!!!!!
