Natchez school board plans retreat

Published Friday, September 11, 2009

NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams School District Board of Trustees set, at their regular meeting Thursday, a date for their 2009 retreat.

District Superintendent Anthony Morris said the retreat is actually better described as a work session and is an opportunity for board members to meet with school administrators to discuss, in depth, any issues facing schools.

This year’s two-day retreat begins Sept. 21.

The board also briefly discussed two yet-to-be filled assistant principals positions at Natchez High School and Robert Lewis Middle School.

While Morris said the district is still working to fill those slots, the vacancies should not impact the students.

Additionally two teachers within the district that are both currently pursuing administration degrees, on sabbatical, will be working in those roles later this year.

Where does this "retreat" take place? Is it at the School Board Office, a school, or a resort somewhere?

Who wants to go to a retreat at their workplace? That doesn't sound like a real motivating experience.

Only a month into the school year and they need to retreat. So sad.

Why hasn't any of the top dogs thought to use Miss Zandra Mc Donald as an assistant principal? She has her degree in administration already. Mr Buddy Givens would be idea for a position also. He left this district a few years ago because he wasn't given a chance in administration. It appears that the Human Resource Department is afraid of good, competent people. (hint: Donna Stampley,Larry Hooper, Buddy Givens, Aquetta Butler, Montrell Green, Randy Stampley) the list could go on and on.

Does anyone know who the two people are who are in training?

One of the assistant principals will be Mr. Day.

It seems as if we have a semantics issue here. For those who seem to be using the connotative meaning of the word retreat, I will explain.

RETREAT:
(1) A place affording peace, quiet, privacy, or security.
(2) A period of withdrawal, seclusion, meditation or study used by a person or a group to address and draft an action plan to remedy a problem (s).

Given all the problems with the school system, it is proper for the superintendent and board of trustees to retreat. The only problem that I have is that 2 days may not be long enough....
