No arrest in Farmer murder yet
Published Thursday, September 10, 2009
NATCHEZ — Weeks after the brutal murder of Terry Lynn Farmer at her Shadow Lane residence, Natchez Police are still not close to making an arrest.
“I wish we could have (an arrest) in the next few minutes, but we’re not there yet,” Natchez Police Sgt. Craig Godbold said. “Right now it’s an active investigation and we’re interviewing everyone that had anything to do with the case.”
Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said more than 20 people have been interviewed in connection with the case.
“But that’s not unheard of in a homicide investigation,” Mullins said. “We’re interviewing lots of people and looking at all the physical evidence.”
Godbold said while authorities are working to schedule polygraphs with some related to the case, no clear suspect stands out.
And while there’s no clear suspect, there’s also no clear motive, Mullins said.
While police are looking into several motives, they are investigating the possibility that the crime could have been drug related, Mullins said.
Police are also trying to determine whom a crack pipe, the only piece of drug paraphernalia found at the scene, belongs to, Godbold said.
As the NPD continues to conduct interviews and comb over evidence, Farmer’s family can’t do much but wait.
“(Police) just keep telling us to be patient, but it seems like nothing’s happening,” Farmer’s mother, Sallie Simmons said. “And it’s just extremely frustrating. There’s nothing we can do.”
Simmons said since her daughter’s house is still part of a crime scene, the family has not been allowed inside since the murder.
“We’re all just waiting for something to happen,” Simmons said.
On Aug. 20, Natchez Police officers patrolling the area near Farmer’s residence followed the smell of smoke to her house. After the Natchez Fire Department extinguished the fire — which was contained to the back bedroom — Farmer’s body was discovered inside.
It was later determined that Farmer’s death was caused by a single bullet wound to the head and blunt trauma to the head.
Wednesday Adams County Coroner James Lee said autopsy reports indicated Farmer was alive during the fire, which investigators believe was set deliberately to destroy the evidence of her murder, because soot was found in her trachea.
“She had to inhale it,” Lee said.
Investigators from the Natchez Fire Department and the Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office also determined the fire, which burned Farmer’s body, was deliberately set to conceal the crime.

I hope and pray they catch the brutal beast who did this to Terry.

Maybe I watch too many crime shows on TV, I would think that they have plenty to work with to at least come up with a suspect.

It is important to be patient. The police have to collect all the evidence before making an arrest. It is hard to collect evidence in this case because of the fire. So, it's just going to take some time. Rushing to judgement does no good. It only impedes the investigation. I think that has happened in the Felton case. So let's be patient and let them gather all the evidence needed to make a "solid" arrest.

What's wrong with you, belle??? Like beammeupscotty says, they solve these things in an hour on TV.

does anyone else think it is odd, that an officer was driving by and smelled smoke that was coming from a fire... that was contained to one bedroom? I would think, more of the house would have to be on fire in order for someone to notice, much less smell it. Most cops ride with windows rolled up.
It is just something that has been on my mind since this first happened. Could have just been luck

Well obviously this isn't CSI. It's small town America where if they don't have somebody that saw something, it usually does take a long time. That fire really did mess up evidence I'm sure.

concerned- its not the smoke that you can smell, its whats burning that puts off a bitter, pungent smell. you can smell from a good distance away. some people can even identify what part of the house is burning just by the smell.

Siouxlady...I agree with you wholeheartedly. I will not be surprised at all. I'll keep that to myself...but you are absolutely right.

concernedNTZcitizen-
perhaps you're not familiar with the Shadow Ln area, that is the frontage road along Sgt Prentiss, and the Farmer house is just down from Parkway Baptist Church. The house is on a small lot and a policeman riding by would be no further than 20 yards from the house and could easily smell the fire........
glad they got there before the house was totally consumed and spread to neighbors......
NPD has some good leads, they'll get the punks that did this.....
such a sad and tragic event, I'm sure the perp is on the run out of state by now, but that will also help make the Identification .....

Anyone in forensics will tell you that CSI is vastly embellished, especially in the timeline required. Test results are weeks slower than they show on there. Even with the latest technology exactly where you need it, it takes time. Not to mention the fire's effects slowing things down tremendously...it's got to be a mess just from that. Sounds like those closest to it will end up being right.

and thinking of that neighborhood
those houses are close together
I hope the neighbors had been noticing the people and the cars that were in and out of that house, plus you'd think they would have heard the shot, I hope they can/will help out ......

"Police are also trying to determine whom a crack pipe, the only piece of drug paraphernalia found at the scene, belongs to, Godbold said."
Ok no disrespect to the family but NPD needs to inform the public where this investigation is really going??????????? If the police find 100,000 in your house 9 times out of 10 its's yours, right.

Horatio would put on his sunglasses, turn sideways, and say who the perp was.

Looks like the rumors are going to be right about drugs being connected.
I think because someone lives in a nice house & seem to be a respectful person people assume drugs are not the blame, but these day we don't know what is going on behind closed doors.

sorry.. i do not watch csi. seems like i need to though:) To be honest, I dont think that local law enforcement has the resources to solve crimes when there are no witnesses present to say what happened or when there is no confession. Cost associated with forensic analysis is well beyond beyond, so unless there is a proverbial smoking gun, the chances are slim!!!

I thinkin they are investigating it, but its just taking more time. Maybe they learned their lesson from the Felton case. I can not imagine them making another arrest based off testimony from the Street Committee. Right about now law enforcement is looking like a bunch of fools... Making a capital murder arrest with no evidence.... ITS SAD BUT TRUE!!

HERE'S WHAT I THINK!
I BELIEVE THAT WHO EVER WAS TERRY'S BEST FRIEND OR A CLOSE
RELATIVE,....KNOW'S WHO DID THIS TO HER AND OUT OF TOTAL
FEAR ( FOR THIER LIFE,..ARE SCARED TO TELL WHO DID IT,
BECAUSE THEY KNOW THIS LOW-LIFE DRUG DEALER WILL KILL THEM
TOO!)
IT'S ALL JUST AMATTER OF TIME.
THE POLYGRAPH WILL TELL THE TRUTH, AND THE MURDERER WILL BE
BEHIND BAR'S FOR LIFE!
MAY GOD BE WITH THE ENTIRE FARMER FAMILY AND GIVE THEM
PEACE THAT ONLY ( HE CAN! )

People need to remember that we are talking about someones MOTHER, Daughter, Sister. Would you want people putting some of these comments about your family? No matter what the situation we always need to think of others before we speak. Words can really hurt a person. If you have to put "no disrespect to the family" in your comment, then maybe you should not write it.

ingodwetrust, i think you need to stop SHOUTING at people. Speculating won't bring Ms. Terry back. Like TreatOthers said, Someone has lost a mother, a sister, and a daughter here... get a life and have some compassion. My heart goes out to this family, as they have been through SO MUCH over the last several years, so no matter the circumstance of her death, it's still a tragedy. Put your petty assumptions aside, and try to empathize with what it is left of this family, instead of putting them through more ridicule.

She could have let someone stay with her and she found them doing drugs and got into an argument with them and told them to get out or she was going to call the cops and they killed her; it could be as simple as that. "Crack-heads &/or Crank-heads" can become very violent when confronted.

People our local law enforcement are totally dependent on the community solving their cases and doing their job for them. So when you get the occasional criminal that doesn't tell someone what he's done or take someone with him when he does it then that means they have to actually investigate and that'll stump this pitiful excuse for detectives that we have every time. Higher standards and higher pay for law enforcement is the only way to get a competent force that's willing to do, and capable of doing, the kind of investigation that's needed here. The officers we have now are useful merely as ticket writing revenue generators.

mr bobo you are actually right about one thing, and pretty much one thing only-they do need to pay our cops more money!!!! it would take alot for me to have to deal with the stupid crap they deal with on a daily basis. why dont you try it for a week or two and then get back to us all about how stupid they are. since you seem to know so much more and could obviously do a better job, why dont you get into the files and solve this murder and all the other unsolved crimes around here. put your money where your loud a** mouth is

Natchez still has way too much "politics" involved in the running of the Police and Sheriff's departments; and the only way to change that is in an election; get rid of the "old" and bring in some new and take the gloves off and let them do their job, in other words it doesn't matter who you are (or who your family is or what status they hold); you do the crime you will do the time.

well regardless unfortunatley i knew of Terry very well through one of her daughters that dated my best friends son and she i don't believe ever got herself together after her husband and son was killed. the crackpipe wasn't just left there..i know this is a terrible terrible thing and if people with issues would try to get help maybe drugs wouldn't get in there way....i know bc i am speaking from experience but i fortunatley got my $hit together. or i myself could possibly be dead...there should be more help out there for people like terry because tragedy has led alot of people in this small little town into drugs...if i could bet have of natchez citizens do drugs....or are on drugs...these streets need to be cleaned up so maybe this murder crap will stop reoccuring...not be ugly but true

But it wasn't the drugs that killed her. Yeah she was on drugs and this and that.. but ultimately another human killed her. Did the drugs make them do it? That shouldn't be an excuse if thats the case they can say well, "I wasn't on drugs but I was drunk." Being that she was on or used drugs shouldn't have anything to do with the police catching a murderer.
