ACSO seeks reserve officers

Published Sunday, September 6, 2009

NATCHEZ — The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a few good volunteers.

The sheriff’s office is currently accepting applications from county residents that would like to become reserve deputies.

While reserve deputies work strictly on a volunteer basis, they provide a much-needed service for the sheriff’s office and the community, Adams County Sheriff Angie Brown said.

“They’re a great help to us and to the community,” Brown said. “We rely on the assistance they give us. They’re a tremendous help.”

Reserve deputy Ron Jenkins, a four-year veteran, said while working as a reservist is work he enjoys, it’s not always easy.

“First, the training and certification takes about 200 hours,” Jenkins said. “So it takes a real time commitment, and it’s physically demanding. Some people just are not ready for that aspect.”

Jenkins also said applicants should be aware of the cost associated with becoming a reserve deputy.

Reserve deputies are responsible for purchasing their own equipment, including uniforms and a weapon, and should be ready to spend a considerable sum to be properly outfitted.

“Once you get everything you need, you’ll have spent about $2,000, it’s not cheap,” he said.

But for Jenkins, the cost is worth it.

“It’s a way to be out there and give something back to the community,” Jenkins said. “It’s rewarding.”

While the application deadline is Sept. 18, classes won’t begin until Sept. 28.

Interested applicants should contact Jackie Posey at 601-442-2752 for more information.

I hope you are being sarcastic, Grunterhunter.

This is a nice idea, but you can count on it being changed after the election.

ANYONE who thinks any of these candidates will "straighten out" anything don't have a very good memory.

I have heard and read and seen complaints, wide and varied in reason but with one constant - there is always SOMETHING going on that ticks off a large percent of the population.

I know several of the candidates personally, and they all have one thing in common - they aspire to more. Is it more for themselves or to give and be more to the community that they serve?

Count on being disappointed because out of all these candidates only one will win, and the winner will have just one thing wrong with them.

They are only human, and will be subject to the same temptations, favors, influence peddling and backscratching that gets to all elected officials in time.

Hope is nice - hope it will change, hope it will be better, but in the end the political engine around here has been pretty much the same since Natchez was built.

I think the reserve officer program is great, but to ask anybody to pay for training for a job that doesnt pay is nuts. I think its great to have volunteer officers, but the fact that they have to spend almost $2K is terrible.

I second that , fraidoclowns. The same applies to the actual deputies that get paid nothing more than chump change. That's why you have deputies getting assault rifles stolen out of their unlocked cars and putting pictures of themselves in the paper fondling murder weapons without gloves.

The deputies at ACSO start around 32K a year. Or so some of them have told me.
And, sheriff can start his people at whatever he wants, and experience has nothing to do with what some of them get paid in LA.

the reserve officers are doing this community a great service.they are giving back something instead of whinning about what is wrong they are trying to help change it.it is called dedication, you naysayers should get some!!!!!!!

Bunch of power seeking losers wanting to wear a gun and a badge so bad that they'll pay to do it so they can feel tough when they shine a flashlight in your face and ask for your drivers licence and proof of insurance at their monthly roadblock.

what is so bad abt. this is... work for free? put your life on the line and not get paid.comeon now, at least in Louisiana a reserve deputy gets paid for thier time and the sheriffs office has more than enough grants to pay for training. they just want a gung ho kid, wet behind the ears with a dream of becomming a real deputy only to be killed or injured in the line of duty, which him and his family will not be compisated because he volenteered, comeon ppl...

I have thought about doing this for almost a year. I personally didn't think they where accepting anyone for these positions. Think I will go and see where I stand for one. May have to get another job to help buy the equipment, but I love my community!!!

I much rather be a part of the solution then complain about it. The old cliche " Freedom doesn't come free".

BTW, I really enjoyed Cliff Cox being at my pastors 7 year anniversary service last Friday night.

GOD Bless. Remember, JESUS CHRIST is coming soon

I think the reserve program is a good thing. The whole reason Adams county is in the shape its in is because people dont have dedication!....let me take that back. Half of the citizens in adams county are very dedicated.......They will dedicate a whole day to standing in the food stamp line when they could get up off their lazy azz and work!!!!! come on people..... I worked all my life and everything i have, i didnt get from cheating the county by working for cash under the table and getting unemployment, food stamps, welfare, medicade, and social security

I feel that the reserve Deputy program is a great stepping stone for someone such as myself trying to get there foot in the door in Law Enforcement. Sure, it does'nt pay monitarily but it pays off in the pride of trying to make a difference. I have been a Marine and a Soldier for almost eleven years and I have pretty much payed to be in the reserves and guard. By the time I drive to drill and back my drill check is spent on gas and food. Put yourself in the shoes of the people wanting to do this. I am proud to say I start the reserve training Monday.
