Local schools to air Obama

Published Saturday, September 5, 2009

NATCHEZ — When Natchez students head back to class Tuesday after a long Labor Day weekend they’ll be visited by a very special guest speaker.

President Obama will make a nationally televised address to the county’s school students, and most area schools will be watching.

The President is expected to speak on the importance of setting educational goals, staying in school and why it’s important for students to take charge of their own learning.

“That’s a message we think students need to here,” Natchez High School Principal Cleveland Moore said. “These are our future leaders and our future workforce, this is an investment that can help prepare them for that future.”

Natchez-Adams School District Superintendent Anthony Morris said while he has not directed the district’s teachers to air the address in their classrooms, he thought it would be a “good overall civics lesson.”

Even the district’s younger students will be watching Obama Tuesday.

McLaurin Elementary Principal Alice Morrison said if the President is talking to the nation’s students — her students will be watching.

“This is a message from the President to the students,” Morrison said. “We don’t see that much, and I think it’s important they hear what he has to tell them.

“I think it carries some weight.”

But no matter the weight the President’s message carries, some local educators said they’ll be showing the address just to keep their students up-to-date with current events.

“It’s important our students understand what’s happening in the world around them,” said Trinity Episcopal Day School’s Interim Head of School Jackie Ezell.

Trinity students will watch the speech in their government studies class.

Tuesday’s speech is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

I called the superintendents office yesterday and was told that they did not know. When I stated how I was against it in a nice and polite way they hung up on me. That told me exactly where they stand on the issue. Well they can show this trash if they want to,but I know two kids that will not see it. My kids will be sick Tuesday.

I am a retired teacher and I can tell you many of our students are failing in school. Test scores are abyssmal. Dropout rates continue to increase. College admittance and retention rates continue to decline.
Let our president, as past presidents have done, address the children of this nation and encourage them to stay in school. I can guarantee you that some of the folks that are so against their children seeing his speech, have no problem showing their children hours of mind melting TV and Video trash on a daily basis.
Put your politics aside and do something that will help your country grow rather than acting childish with your petty politics.

OK , lets put politics aside , lets talk about this mans intention to remove anything that remotely resembles the word God , and no he is not going to publicly declare that , being the sneaky little little Muslim that he is , he is going to do it discretely !! He is going to use his platform for his own agenda . If you think the drop out rate has anything to do with politics you are kidding yourself , parents have failed their children and get feelings hurt when you say anything about it . People keep wanting to remove God from schools and keep attendance rate up. IT DON'T WORK THAT WAY !! Our country was built on our faith in God , not the muslim god ali or what ever he is !

“That’s a message we think students need to here,” Natchez High School Principal Cleveland Moore said.

Maybe everyone needs to HEAR the message?

In New Orleans it is mandatory for the kids....what kind of president of the US would make schools have something mandatory if he wasn't intending to do a little brainwashing?

Posted by realtalker123 (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 7:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why is it that all that is wrong with this country y'all now want to blame on the current president, he wasn't the one to remove prayer and GOD from the schools this happen long before he became president but now all of a sudden everyone wants to blame him for it. Be honest its not that he is coming on tv its the fact that change has come to america and some of you can't handle it. We have had president on tv in our kids classrooms before and no one said a mumbling word now all of a sudden it a problem, hes a muslim, hes brainwashing our kids, or hes forcing our kids to think like he does. Whatever! When praying was removed from the schools, it wasn't removed from my home, and if your faith is that weak then you didn't have the kind of faith that is needed is to fight GOD's war against sin and satan. Because as for me and mine no one can or will stop me from praying to GOD ALMIGHTY and JESUS CHRIST. And being a father and a decon my trust in the one true GOD no man or other faith can shake or brainwash that out of me, my children, my grandchildren or the younger decons under my wings. And i am quite sure it wasn't the president who made it manditory for his news confernce to be shown in the schools in New Orleans. And the state that this country is in can be traced back to the last 8yrs of poor goverment leadership, george bush, a man that wasn't a leader enough to help the people of this country (New Orleans hurricane Katrina) out when he was needed for two days. So stop using your kids as a reason to show your pure hate of the fact that the president of this great country not the race you wish him to be. Its time to grow up people!

Any schools that are making this viewing mandatory for students are setting themselves up for a major lawsuit if their communities are knowledgeable of their rights according to school law.

Although I will allow my children to watch the airing, parents do have a say in what their children are exposed to in schools - especially things that are religious or politcal in nature.

Natchez schools beware! A letter should have been sent home with the children for parents to give their permission and alternative activities should be provided for children whose parents oppose them participating.

Rattlesnake - Personally, I wouldn't keep my children out of school. Your children have just as much of a right to benefit from Tuesday's school day as any other students. I would however take my children into the school office Tuesday morning and make it known if I did not want my children to participate in watching the telecast. The principal or secretary can not "hang up" on a person face-to-face.

To VillageIdiot:
If you were meaning to imply that the misspelled word "here" was the principal's fault then, you really are an idiot. It apparently is a typo by the Democrat. The Democrat did not say that they had a written statement from the principal. Some of you are so petty and pathetic!

If these same people (who are scrutinizing everything that President Obama says) had done the same thing to the true Village Idiot (GW Bush), just maybe this country wouldn't be in the shape it's in now! Most of you who post here need to come into the 21st century!

KUDOS to NASD, Trinity School and to all the other school districts that plan to air the president's speech.

The school is going to air this program regardless of the parents objections. I went yesterday to check my daughter out for a doctors appointment. I was informed that there is a new policy no child can be checked out after 2:45. I was informed that this policy was just put into place this year and that it was in the handbook. So, I checked the handbook also in there is no saggy pants, cell phones, fighting, cursing, etc. The afternoon I arrived on campus at the Natchez High School 3 of the above mentioned actions were taking place. At Friday nights ballgame against Ferriday on player was kicked out the game. I hope they enforce all rules not just the rules that are easy to enforce.

Personally, I do not recall when a Presidential address, tailored for and aimed directly at kids, was broadcast to the class room and required to be watched in many districts. This "message" is coming directly from the same man that appointed this guy Van Jones as one of his "Czars".

Posted by inHisimage (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 7:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

msubulldog - Parental objection can not prevent the school from airing the program, but the law says that alternative activities/assignments must be provided for students whose parents object in a place where the program is not being aired. Failure to do so is a direct violation.

Also, for those of you who have concerns about the content of the message, you can view the entire speech on the White House website on Monday. From that point, you can decide if you want your child to hear the message.

unclered So you claim Obama is the kind of roll model kids need. So far what has he done other than appoint a bunch of czars? He is surrounding his self with the same kind of people he has always been around, people like Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayres just to name a couple. But of course he never heard what Wright said in the so called church he went to all of those years. Ayers was just someone he lived close to. With the lies he has already told how can we trust him to talk to our kids?

I read Mr. rattlesnake's statement and I had to step away from the screen for a little while. I thought about all of the men who fought and were wounded, and died in the Vietnam war. I say that war, because that's the one I got wounded in. They died or got wounded so this man could have his freedom to do whatever he think is right. As long as it's in the confines of the law. Every President I have known and respected has been White. I learned in the military to respect him, and I still have that in me. But we live in a new day now, and we have a Black president and noone can change that. Rattlesnake has a right to do what he want with his children. Just like I have a right with my own. I teach my children to respect our President, and they do. Even when former President Bush was in that position.
Even Mr. Randall has a right to spew his trash all over the place. It's their right. Being a Black man I never taught my kids to hate anyone , not even our White Presidents. But, these people have their place in history too.

Posted by itsmemame (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 8:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

NEXT STEP... indoctrinate the children! If I had school age children, I would seriously consider not sending them to school that day. Adults have a hard enough time deciphering what Obama has to say, as evidenced by the fact that the voters who elected him are now causing the major shift in the polls which disfavor Obama.

If the good and true Americans do not stand together and fight for our individual rights, America will be lost.
Our precious freedoms are disappearing under this regime and we have to unite and show a solid front.
We have to show this regime that we will not be pushed around anymore.
They have proven that if we give them an inch they will take a mile. They have played the race card to death. Now we have to stand together and tell them NO MORE and their intimidation is not going to work any more. All obama's fans think and spew hate. That's all they know. They are ignorant to the fact that love and peace makes for a better way of life simply because they have had people like obama and his co-horts brain wash them into believing they can have so much more and have it better if they exile the white race.
I for one am sick to death of these radical, left-wing, ignorant people, that want only to spew their hatred.
If you want to hear and know the truth, tune into Fox news and you will get the complete totally TRUE news. Listen to who obama is trying to shut up, Glen Beck and Bill O'Riley. What they have found about this regime is unbelievabe.

This week and last week at 4pm I have been watching Glen Beck and it is mind blowing what he is telling the viewers. Talk about an eye opener! He also has a book on all this that I think came out last December in paperback so people can afford it but he also wants it just passed around. Oh and the proceeds go to our vets!

I guess he is qualified to speak.

“By his own admission, Obama spent his final two years in high school skipping classes, playing basketball, doing cocaine and getting drunk.”

“Similarly, his admission to Harvard Law School is highly questionable. Where are his LSAT scores? And how does one graduate from Columbia without honors and yet get accepted at Harvard Law? Lastly, his ascendency to the Presidency of the Harvard Law school would appear to have also been a case of blatant affirmative action, since the student Obama had only written one legal paper — and that was quite short and remarkably undistinguished. So where are his grade transcripts?”

Destiny - I support many of President Obama's initiatives. My political views are moderately liberal. I do not spew hatred and am far from ignorant. I am not wishing exile upon the white race or any other race for that matter. The fact that you give voice to such intolerance speaks to your own personal insecurity and lack of knowledge. I challenge you to identify any American president who got it all right all the time. For now, President Obama is OUR president - meaning all Americans. His success as our leader will result in our success as a nation. Merely wishing him away will not change that as a fact.

Here is why some of us are opposed to any more of this, transcript of an "educator", very loosely defined, in Asheville, N.C. addressing her class on the campaign:

"Harris:We want to talk about the presidential election. I want to ask you, who are you pulling for? Raise your hand.

Student: Obama.

Harris: You pullin for Obama. Who you pullin for?

Student: Obama.

Harris:Any of you pullin for John McCain? That’s fine, say him as well.

Student: Obama.

Student: Obama.

[Cathy, the daughter of an American soldier answers McCain.]

Harris:John, oh lord, John McCain.

Oh Jesus, John McCain.

Ok, now I wanna axe you somethin.

Why are you pullin for John McCain? It’s ok, but why are you pullin for John McCain?

Cathy: I thinks it’s because my parents are going for him too.

Harris: Ok, your parents are going for him. Why are you pullin for Ba-RACK. Barack.

Student: I just want a black president sometimes.

Ok, you want a black president.

Student: The reason why I want Barack Obama is because he’s making good changes in the good country and stuff like that.

Harris: So, he’s making good changes for our country. Now can you tell me just a little bit more, like what type of changes?

Like not having big fights between Iraq and having soldiers killed.

So in other words, Barack is going to end that war in Iraq. What do you all know about that war in Iraq?

[Harris addresses Kathy] Talk, cause yo daddy in the military. Talk. It’s a senseless war! And by the way, Cathy, the person that you’re picking for president said that our troops could stay in Iraq for another hundred years if they need to!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezrUd8xH0...

Here's why students are failing, teachers like this who say "axe" for ask and "yo daddy" for your daddy, using their power as teacher to intimidate children who don't have the same socialist political ideology, who don't have a degree in any real discipline but just a vague "education" degree, meaning they know how to approximately parrot what the dept of education and the teacher's unions want them to parrot.

And it is not so much the president speaking to the kids that is upsetting to us, it's the inclusion of those lesson plans asking kids to think about what they can to to help the president do what he wants to do. That's clear political agenda. A lot of us don't want children pressured into becoming Obama worshippers.

Posted by realtalker123 (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 8:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If my TV only had 2 channels on it, one had Glen Beck and Bill O'Riley on it and, the other one had paint drying on it, i would be more informed watching paint dry than i would watching those two morons. Talk about brainwashing and if you listen to anything they have to say and believe then this country truly is in bad shape! Because the only thing worst than being brainwashed is being brainwashed by not one but to idiots!

Posted by EnKiKur (Marty Ellerbe) on September 5, 2009 at 8:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

We are also against the creation of political personality cults. It was common in places like Reich Germany, Soviet Russia, Maoist China, Castro Cuba, for pictures of leaders to be posted everywhere and for school kids to be taught chants and songs idealizing leaders, even worshipping them in some cases.

What Obama really wants to do is to get all kids, but especially black kids out of their homes and into schools at three years of age, keep them in school until late in the evening over a longer school year so government indoctrination can replace parental indoctrination. Obama thinks black parents aren't worthy of raising their own children, so he is going to do it for them.

There is no doubt Obama is a socialist of some sort, but what sort is not entirely clear. When he gives speeches he speaks like a Marxist communist, but when he acts politically he acts like a fascist, marrying business and state and giving this alliance control over political decisions- that's not democracy. A lot of us don't want American children being taught a philosophy that subverts the ideas of liberty the country was founded upon.

And by the way i didn't vote for President Obama because he was black, but because the president we had for the last a 8 years totally screwed this country up and i was not about to vote for his right hand screw up man to continue doing the same.

"inhisname".....randall....rattlesnake...natrahsa...gottabehappy(?)...realtalker....and all the rest of you "I'm a Christian. I love God. I go to church every Wednesday and twice on Sunday", FRAUDS:

Ask yourselves a few questions: WHAT WOULD THE CHRIST I CLAIM TO BELIEVE IN, TO WORSHIP, AND TRY TO EMULATE...WHAT WOULD HE DO? WHAT WOULD HE SAY TO ME IF HE WAS STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME RIGHT NOW? WOULD HE BE PROUD TO HAVE MY NAME ASSOCIATED WITH HIS?

I don't believe he'd be too awfully proud of you. He'd still love you and there is still time to be forgiven, but you have to ask for it, and then CHANGE.

He gave us two, the only two commandments that mean anything: 1) to love God; 2) to love each other as he loved us.

I know that second one is the tricky one, but it's as easy as the first if you truly try to live your life as Christ-like as you claim.

You people have so much hatred for what other people have told you to hate. Find out for yourself. Read the Qur'an before you denounce it. What you will find is the Bible's old testament, and new testament written as one followed up by Mohammed's story of his conversion to his belief in the one true God. It is the same God, the God of Abraham or Ibrahim in the Qur'an, called by a different language's pronunciation. (Simply: your name is John in English; you are Juan in Spanish). And if you've read the Bible and the story of Abraham, you know the story of Ishmael and Isaac, right. Abe's two sons..Ishmael went on to found the Islamic faith and Isaac went on to be the father of the Hebrew faith. Both Faiths come from the single and only God of Abraham.

What you won't find in the Qur'an is anywhere it is stated to kill all the Christians.

Sometimes I think some of you people think God only made one race of people and all the others evolved from monkeys. Well, all I have to say about that is, "Good Luck" explaining that one when you turn comes to stand before Jesus. He may figure you've been out in the cold so long you need a good big fire to keep you warm...........

Use your brains people for more than keeping the echo out of your head!

Like you, I am a practicing Christian - not just in weekly church attendance, but in my daily life. You don't know me or anything about me aside from my few posts on a newspaper comment board. Apparently, you have me confused with someone else because I can honestly say that I have never posted anything here that promotes hatred toward anyone.

This man has surrounded himself by people that hate America and what we stand for. Some of you people still can't or won't see him for what he really stands for. In all actuality he is just a fiqurehead for those that want to see us fall. Ask yourself if a white man had obamas background of associates or was trying to push things like his version of healthcare reform down our throats, would you still be for him. President Bush made some mistakes but he couldn't hold a candle to this one. I was fearful of him before the election and I'm much more fearful of him now.

It would be very interesting if Nd would send some reporters to the classrooms to hear just how the teachers talk to the class after they hear the speech. I also wonder how long it will be before all the comments on this site will be silenced.

I still can't get the fact that people think President Obama is a "muslim." And what if he was? There are muslims who do crazy things but name a religion that dosen't have its idiots.

Are we to believe that only muslims kill? Catholics don't kill people in the name of their religion? Did you forget the Crusades, The Inquisition or the violence between the Catholics and Prodestants in Northern Ireland? Did you forget that the man who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma City called himself a "christian?" Did you forget that those people who dressed up in bedsheets who lynched and murdered black people called themselves "christians" also? Am I not supposed to listen to the Pope now because of people who commited violent acts who called themselves Catholic? Am I to believe that every Mormon man has fifteen wives and thirty kids?

The Catholics, Mormons, Muslims, Christians, Methodists that I know and associate with are good people who only want to live in peace and raise their families. The world that I choose to live in is bigger than religious differences or the color of a persons skin.

Now President Obama wants to talk to our children and encourage them to stay in school and people go ballistic. Other Presidents talked to our children with no fuss from the people, now the current president (who happens to be black or half black or half white) wants to talk to our kids and lookout! How dare President Obama to tell kids to stay in school and become educated people who will one day help America! Who in the blue hell does he think he is? My child dosent need some interracial President telling him to go out and become a productive citizen of the United States!!! (Yes, I am being sarcastic!!) Remember that "W" was in a school on 11-Sept-01 when the terrorist attacks happened, I also remember that he sat on his duff for several minutes with the classic "deer in the headlights look" AFTER he was told that the country was under attack.

Ya'll keep holdin' on to that hate!

My intent is not to call anyone out, but to perhaps make people think about what they are saying and why they are saying it.

I am such a sinner. Everyday I have to ask God to forgive me and my mouth and to give me another chance to change my behavior...and everyday I know he does. And it's His words through me in contemporary language he brings out. Sometimes I don't get it right, sometimes I make mistakes or misunderstand his meaning, but still he forgives me, because he would rather me be saying something than saying nothing.

....and realtalker--I hope you will do the same for me next time I get out of line...that's what Jesus meant when he told us to take care of each other, huh?

realtalker - you should check the facts about New Orleans- it was Mayor Ragan that did nothing.... the buses he could have used were left in the flood, he could have evacuated everyone if he had taken action, Bush called him and warned him of Katrina, Ragan responded that he didn't need any help - that's just plain history and the facts. It's amazing how some people will lie to suit their own needs.... I'm thankful that our kids haven't been killed in the street blown up by IED's due to Bush/Cheney. Terrorist detainees deserve NO Civil Liberties as a citizen, and should remain at Guantanamo.

And Bush is NOT to blame for what is going on in Obama's Administration- (yes he did open the door with the first stimulus, and he was wrong for that) but Obama is plain out socializing everything, even to the extent of fascism- gov-t owned business....

Just look and realize the political associations of his czars- many of them have communist backgrounds and flaunt it .....

Personally I have faith that our students can think and make decisions on their own and the more Obama talks and does, the more we know about him and his approvals will continue to plummet, the more we know the better......he is determined to make UNAMERICAN changes to our country, and he will drive himself into failure to be re-elected next election. The PEOPLE are not stupid and we are beginning to see the true Obama come out.

and I don't blame Obama

if you were listening at all

he said what he wanted to do

that's why I voted against him

now instead of just looking at his skin color

listen to his message

and decide what is really best for our country

Country First

he is not a good democrat like JFK "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what YOU can do for your country!!!"

Obama's whole platform has been about what the country will take away from one group and give to another.........socialism plain and simple

Never said it did, but considering the quality of the posts, if the shoe fits......However if one is to pop on over to this site, http://orsap.mde.k12.ms.us:8080/MAARS/ma..., along with this site, http://www.clarionledger.com/article/200..., oh and a local favorite http://www.natchezdemocrat.com/news/2009.... It's painfuly obvious that education does not rank high on MS list of priorities. As for the first web link posted I'm just curious when this community is going to go through the process of integration, as it appears there is a conscious effort to keep students segregated in the Natchez-Adams County.

For anyone who is interested, as you all should be since you are posting on here if you go to this link http://www.ed.gov/admins/lead/academic/b... you can read about what the speech will be about, along with the activities that children will take part in from K-6 and 7-12. At least give it a look, if you agree with it fine if you don't agree with it, that's fine too, but don't blast something that you haven't actually looked at and read through. Educate yourselves so that you can better educate your children.

and then Obama quit his church when it threatened his political career, does that tell us more?

now since taking office- I haven't heard much about his church attendance at all, I think he took a month touring churches in DC trying to pick one, but has he gone, reports indicate NOT.....

Gee, southernbelle...were you a Chi O at Ole Miss?

Let's see, graduated an ivy league school, tried (and was successful) forcing his policies like an illegal war, constant unfounded threats of terror, illegal wire-tapping, his own education reform package (the dreadful failure of "No child left behind"), his illegal empowerment of presidential authority, and much, much more of his agenda down our throats? Well, I think we've just experienced such a president...and he was a white man...George W Bush. The man who surrounded himself with fine upstanding people like Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Rove.

Sure, as you understate, "President Bush made some mistakes", but his mistakes only cost us our jobs, our homes, retirement, pensions, over 4000 lives of the young people in this country, he fiddled while New Orleans drowned, piddled while our nation was under attack, spent billions and billions of dollars each month in an illegal war, over a trillion in bailouots for the wealthiest people in our country who were directly responsible for our economic crisis, trillions in national debt,...and trillions more uncounted because Bush's cooking of the books didn't include his illegal war as a debt incurred by our taxpayers. He made shady deals, let his people run roughshod over the american people all the while keeping that SE grin on his stupid face.

Figurehead for those that want us to fail? The only persons I've heard hope for his failure, which is ultimately our failure, are Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh......I've only seen Obama try to come up with some kind of plans to help pull us out of the mess in which Bush left us.

And if you would read the health reform bill as it was presented to congress, not the version before congress now--the watered down unpassable, I hope, version after our legislators rolled up the pork, you will see it was real reform and provided a competitive marketplace for the insurance and drug companies to replace the monopolistic one created by their lobbyists' money and arm twisting, and the weakness and greed of those elected to represent our interests.

Why is it called an historic event since its been done before? I still don't believe in pushing politics down our childrens throats. How many of our students even know what "The Constitiuton Of the United States "says or what it means. Or are we waiting for the "new" history to be written so our educators can ram that down our childrens throats. I think most of the opposition about obamas speech to our children comes from not trusting our government anymore. obama has not shown any positive changes yet.

inhisimage-yes his (Obama's) success will be our success, and I hope he is good for our country, but so far what has he done? liberated terrorists, yes he has. Socialized our system of enterprise, yes he has. Introduced declared communists into his advisory staff (czars) , yes he has. HHHMMM, well if it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, and does everything else like a duck, even though it doesn't look like a duck, it's still a duck. Judge a man by his words and his actions, and we all have every right to judge Obama as he has taken the oath to protect our Constitution from all enemies ......even himself the way I see it.

don't forget the direct opposite of your statement is also true - his (Obama's) failures will also be our failures, and that is why so many people are changing sides on his policies, we are beginning to get a real taste of his policy effects, and most people don't like what is happening, I know it must be hard for you liberals to accept, but all the moderates are swinging to the right...... Thank GOD. We can stop him if we unite.

let's all remember where the Great State of Mississipi is ranked when it comes to education.(49th). Regardless of what anyone thinks about our President he was elected by the majority of this country and by the way the largest population is caucasian (white). The people in Mississippi believes Ole Miss, Mississppi State is ranked higher in education, than Harvard or any of the Ivy League school; that's why there has never been a President from their prestegious universities, let's not forget Millsaps.(lol) No way do they want affirmative action it may really expose Mississippi hands, when it is discover the great state can't compete on that level either. To the people of adams county you built two private schools, and yet you go to public schools asking parents for black students, to the point you offer scholarships. Why is that so!!!!! could it be you need them? Could it be this country need President Obama? And as far as education, you people would rather pay high taxes+tuition trying to convince yourself that you really know what you are doing, when it is obvious. If you people sat by and watch Dr. Edney, and Dr. Morris drive your town and county financially into a hole, not realizing big business and education go together
then you are far worse off than I thought. Thank heaven there are several highways that leads away from Natchez. Thank You citizens of Natchez for opening my eyes before it was to late.

My daughter, who is 13, will have to see and hear things her whole life and decide to agree or disagree. Keeping your kids at home makes YOU the brainwasher. Are your children so weak minded that one talk from the president will ruin them for life? I am an athiest, I dispise religion, but I let my daughter attend church with her friends. She knows my opinion, her's will have to be her own. I don't force her to believe what I do. My daughter and I have discussed the fact that she will hear a speach from Obama on Tuesday. And for your information ,these days I actually consider myself more of an independent than anything else. Meaning an independent thinker. I'm sure Obama's speech will be rhetoric, to try and improve his approval ratings and fairly moderate

all about staying in school, yes that's good; taking responsibility, yes that's good......

and there will be some stuff I'm sure about FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE - well it is yet to be decided whether that is good or not, but in my opinion major fundamental change to our country is BAD..... we are a Democratic Republic and to alter that is disastrous....

Obama can and will talk all he wants, our students can think for themselves.....and as i said earlier, the more he does and talks the better, as his approval ratings continue to plummet....... his steep decline in approval ratings is historical, I think the second worst in history .

Americans are not fools, you know the ole saying - you can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time.....

I predict Obama's reign will be very tumultuous and controversial, he was supposed to be the great healer, with hope and promise, and bring us all together- well it ain't happening that way is it? He's destined for one term.

Sandbagger, I'm with you, what religion is he? I know that HE IS NOT BLACK, HE's MIXED, HE HAD A MUSLIM FATHER, WAS RAISED IN A MUSLIM SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY IN INDONESIA,(BECAUSE MAYBE HIS MOTHER WAS ALSO BY HER MARRYING 2 MEN THAT WERE), HE APPEARED TO NOT BE ANYTHING WHEN HE RETURNED TO HAWAII AND WAS RAISED BY WHITE GRANDPARENTS UNTIL HE STARTED CAMPAIGNING IN CHICAGO MANY YEARS LATER. AND STILL RETAINED MANY MUSLIM INFLUENCES AND BACKERS IN CHICAGO DURING THAT TIME. I believe 'possibly' because he knows what politicians and many of these bloggers know, that you can win votes through the influence of poor, uneducated citizens through churches. You defenders of politicians doing this strategy should be defending these poor ignorant people instead! And if you're one of these people, have some pride and dignity not to be munipulated. Perhaps the bloggers on this site just don't want other impressionable people, our children, to see someone like him and think that this is ok. And also I don't believe that there is anything wrong with being of the Muslim faith, just not being honest about it, and using the Christian faith for political votes!

Obama himself said to judge him by the people he associates with. Look at some of these people.

Van Jones admitted communist and racist
Rev Wright hate spewing socialist/anti-American
Bill Ayres terrorist
Mr. Resko crook that bought favors thru contributions

This is a small list but there are plenty more.

It is not racist or ignorant to disagree with Obama. We are all Americans and have the right to say what we want, especially when our freedoms are being taken.

belle---he's not pushing politics down our children's throats...he's sending them a message to stay in school and study hard so they can get the education necessary to compete and partake of the good our country has to offer. so they can escape the welfare roles, pay taxes and become real and proud members of our society.

Krogers---you and your right-wing pals continually say Obama is socializing our country and purporting fascism with government owned industry... I know you remember it was Bush and Paulson would bought us a huge chunk of the financial and insurance industry with taxpayers money when they bailed out the banks, Wall St and AIG to the tune of over a trillion dollars, with no strings or regulations attached... yeah, I know you do because acknowledged that small fact, but then went back to calling Obama names. The meager, by those standards, $25 billion bailout given by the Obama administration to General Motors, wherein he then fired their crummy CEO. He let Chrysler go bankrupt. He put restrictions on how and on what they could do with the money...unlike Bush and Paulson who simply handed over the money and said ...'go ahead pay your executives millions in bonuses for running their companies into bankruptcy, refurnish their offices with $85,000 toilets from France, and take them on million dollar get aways...keep living the good life on the shoulders of the middle class.'

When, in late 2008, the automakers flew to Washington from 1500 miles away, the first thing they were asked is how they got there, then chastised for flying. No one said a word to the CEO of Bear-Stearns for flyinig in his jet from NYC, which is a measley 270 miles, or the CEO of AIG flying in from 572 miles away in Atlanta to pick up their multi-billion dollar checks. No, the auto industry employs regular, blue-collar working class people, not the Ivy League rich kids with skulls and bones in their closets...No, the elitists from the Republican Party want no part in helping out people like us, we actually work for a living. They want to cut taxes for the rich so they can get richer and maybe trickle down a little ... or accidentally spill some of it on us.

The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) is controlled by Democrats. Here is why Obama's video talk with public school children is invasive: unlike all other Americans being regularly exposed to Obama video messages, our kids are subject to special conditions which has in fact crossed the line into propaganda. Specific conditions include (1) original DOE instructions to school teachers suggested prepping kids beforehand and then holding a feedback session afterwards, with content favorable to Obama (how can I help President Obama, making posters with Obama quotes, etc.); (2) kids exposed to such pre and post video manipulation are stripped of any possible parental guidance during the manipulation; (3) kids are a captive audience, forced to sit and listen with respect, unless parents buck the system and hold kids at home on Tuesday; (4) in sharp contrast to all other Obama video messages, where Americans have the opportunity listen to pre and post video comments which feature both pro and con viewpoints, the kids sit in an environment totally controlled by the teacher, who could very well be an Obama shill, as apparently, their paymaster (the Natchez school system itself) is, judging from some other posted comments; and (5) public schools, especially in the South, have majority student populations which come from Democrat households, so in-class peer pressure will strongly reflect Democrat values. In light of all these points, even a totally innocuous message within Obama's video will very likely be given an adoring spin in before and after comment sessions at the vast majority of our public schools. There is no precedent for such an invasive assault on public school children by any past President. No biased DOE instructions were given out in any past telecast, no adoring media spoon fed the public to believe in advance that the President's intent was harmless, and never before has mainstream media refused to publish critical facts such as the above. Wake up!

Posted by eawprops (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 12:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

bigloss Obama can only make a speech if he's in front of a teleprompter. It's one thing to refer to notes when making a speech, it's totally different when you just stand there and read from a TV screen. He's no great speaker. He doesn't speak so well when asked direct questions where no teleprompter is available.

belle--as long as you and your pals continue to blame Obama for our present situation and hold him responsible for the atrocities of the past president... yes, I will continue to remind you that Bush and his policies put us in the mess Obama is trying his best to remedy.

You make absolutely no sense when you make a statement like, "George is gone and now Obama is being held accountable for this country." That's akin to saying I just robbed the bank, but because I ran out of the bank and you are the next customer in line, you are responsible for my theft.

As for socialism...Rush speaks with forked tongue!! He says one thing, but supports big business and lobbyists who for decades have controlled our country. Capitalism is supply and demand, competition, and survival of the qhickest.

Our present health care industry wants no competition from anywhere outside their close knit industry, because the fix is in...

Do you think it is anything but socialized medicine when an insurance company can tell your doctor how much they can charge for their service? Do you think it's anything but socialistic when an insurance company can tell your doctor what tests he can perform on you? What do you call it when an oil company can set foreign policy? Or drug companies can decide which products the FDA approves, or why the same drugs cost 100 times more in the United States than anywhere else in the world?

You may think I need to move on, but you need to wake up.

Krogers, so what's wrong with Harvard students listening to Iran's ruler, or anyone else for that matter, speak?

I've listened to Rush, Sarah, Bill, Glen and I confessed my sin of thanking God that I wasn't like them.

Posted by happyreader (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 12:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I remember that the president reading the story about the goat didn't know about the attack until he was informed about it in front of the children. It got caught on tape. I don't think Dubya is such a good actor that he could fake the horror that came over his face.

I don't have a problem with the president speaking to children about staying in school, any more than I have a problem with any other citizen doing so. He does not need to be discussing his political agenda with them, but I see no reason that he can't encourage them to study hard, etc. A previous poster, however, brought up an interesting point. It's unheard of for a president to give a mass-broadcast speech geared specifically toward children. The fact that he is doing so during the school day, when children will be a captive audience and parents will not be available to intervene if they find whatever he is saying to be objectionable, is something that I find a little unsettling. I would have thought it was wierd if Bush had done it, too.

If any state needs to hear a speech on staying in school it would be Mississippi and Louisiana, we are ranked 49 and 50th. The underlying hatred for our President in the red states and any policies he promotes comes from racism pure and simple. Where was the outcry when Reagan and Bush spoke to school children? All the excuses in the world for keeping children home, or not allowing them to hear President Obama speak on education are a shining example of why we are at the bottom of the barrel.

I was glad when a mixed-race man got into the serious running for the presidency. He seemed like a good guy, and I thought that if he were elected he might help to heal some of the racial tension in our country. That is, until I found out more about him, his views, and his agenda, at which point I could no longer support him. I respect the office of the President, and I pray for wisdom and safety for him because he is our President, but I do not agree with him on much. That doesn't mean that I have "hatred" for him.

Maybe, just maybe, the people in the "red states" are opposed to much of Obama's agenda because they disagree with his "blue" views. Not everything is about race. Well, maybe it is for you, but not for most people.

But I do know that reading to children is one of the best ways to encourage them to become better readers, which will enable them to study hard and do well in school. I don't think it was a waste for him to do so, and I think there are quite a few librarians and reading/English teachers who would agree with me. Personally, I would be thrilled if Barack Obama took the time to come in person and read a story to my kid - I just wouldn't want him discussing his political agenda with them.

Well, he could have potentially inspired many more kids to read by taking it to the tv cameras than going to a lone school in Florida. Strange.

I think it unfair to keep putting Mississippi down by extoling our 49th place ranking in Education without patting ourselves on the back for our Number One rankings....we're #1 in unwed mothers, #1 in teenage pregnancy, #1 in obesity, #1 in cases of West Nile virus, #1 in cardiovascular disease, #1 in high blood pressure, #1 in disabetes, #1 in adult inactivity, we are the #1 poorest state in the union, and last but not least, we are the #1 state when it comes to scoring lower than any other state on the National Assessments of Educational Progress in both math and science.

Mississippians...stand up and take a bow!!!

There is so much wrong here at home, we need to shut up and get to work fixing our own problems. Do ya think?

oh yeah bigboss- Obama needs the prompter not a paper....

southernwoman- no one is holding anyone back here, for decades education and welfare have propped you and yours up and given you every opportunity possible......and if you need me to explain why it's WRONG for a known TERRORIST LEADER - who would wipe Israel off the map, is in denial of the Halocaust, supplies terrorists with explosives and ammunition and training, oppresses his own people with fake elections and Sharia Law (as a woman I would expect you to take offense to that)- to address a school of easily influenced liberals (Harvard students) then you would never understand anyway. But in an attempt - allowing such an address acknowledges and contributes to a certain level of acceptance that his evil might be worth listening to, when in fact it is evil and should be stamped out at every opportunity. If he came to Mississippi State I hazard a guess that some good ole boy might put a bullet in his brain.....

you know these kids around here hear the "stay in school" sermon all the time.... they look at Obama and all they think is "that Oreo ain't hitting on nuttin, he's working for da man" ( and they're right, he's in debt to the special interest of far left money mongers, labor unions, etc, wanting to make a killing on currency manipulation, and "green" industry) and most adults are thinking "what happened to my stimulus money?"

Obama's talk will fall on deaf ears at best. So I'm not bothered by it at all.

So what are yo liberals bellyaching about anyway, he's gonna have his little useless speech.....you're just upset his national approval ratings are DOWN, DOWN, DOWN AND GOING DOWN>>>>>

Ok, so let me say this, "yeswecan" I agree with you. Dropout rates are high and test scores are VERY low. I'm currently in the school system and I feel like the kids should hear what our president has to say. Yes I know as teachers we should be the ones to improve the test scores, etc. but there is only so much we, as teachers, can do. This has nothing to do with religion. In my opionion if they hear it from him then they will say "Ok well maybe I will get my act together and do what I know I can do"! I have no problem with it and wish our school will allow us to air it or at least allow us some time in our daily schedules to watch it.

Old gd: “That old race card don't fly no more. Its all used up”. You can live in denial all you want, but the race card is alive and well throughout the United States. They have crawled out from every rock where they had laid dormant during the last eight years. The race card never went away, and now that we have a ½ black-white President they have become very outspoken. As a society we have not progressed very far and that truly is a sad commentary.

Happy: First and foremost I appreciate your civility in your comments and your prayers for the safety of our POTUS. Unfortunately, not all on this blog are civil with their comments, and we all know who they are. We can discuss without agreeing and agree to disagree. I grew up in a place without any racial problems, overtones, segregated schools and all children no matter what color were treated equally as were their parents. I am not assuming anything when it comes to a discussion of red states vs. blue states. One thing I have learned on this blog however, is that if the shoe fits wear it proudly no matter what your stance. You should not be offended by SWAMP mainly because you are not a white male and second because you are a caring person, the shoe doesn’t fit you. But when you step out of this very little town the racism towards our President is very prevalent. It truly is beyond my comprehension that the right wing has used despicable tactics in extolling their less than virtuous and zealous attacks on any and all things Obama.

This is not just a southern thing. So many people are upset because they cannot trust this president to do what is best for our country. If you think you aren't judged by the company you keep, then you'd better think again. We have to be diligent in watching our children. They are very impressionable. This president and his cabinet are trusted less with every day that passes. There is nothing wrong with telling our children how important it is to stay in school but this goes beyond that. I'm also glad our present day textbooks are being questioned. It's good that parents are paying attention to what their children are subjected to in schools. I'm sure there will be plenty of politics discussed in front of the children when they come home after school on Tuesday. It might end up having a positive affect on these kids yet.

so what's your point mojo--

raise taxes so the rich will have to fire all the workers ? That's just stupid, better to let them keep some income so reinvestment and hiring can take place

have you ever run a business and had employees?

Or just taken a handout? Or just worked for someone else that took all the risk of running a business so you could have a job?

000117- if what you say has any truth to it, then why are there so many gifted authors from the South?

I don't know what you liberals are whining so about, we have every right to DOUBT the intentions of the man Obama, he serves US - the people- I respect the office, but I know there is no way he can deliver on his promises, and it is the liberals that have fallen for his lies that will ultimately hate him. I can feel it in your responses here, you are worried to death he will fail. Personally I expect it, as I said earlier, fundamental change will be catastrophic to our economy and way of life. The more he talks and does the more the truth will come out, he has been very deceptive so far and fooled many, but as the approval ratings have indicated, the TIDE HAS CHANGED. Obama may well be of good intentions, good intentions can pave the way to hell if the means of those intentions are harmful, and there is evidence that those behind him, are attempting to crush our government and way of life from within. I don't trust his 40 some odd czars, and if you cannot see the socialistic/communistic tendencies of Obama's rhetoric, then you are a fool. He is certainly no true Democrat, as JFK said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather ask what YOU can do FOR your country". Yet Obama is constantly wanting to take from one segment of our population and transfer their wealth to another, that will cause great strife and loss. Time will tell. Pray for our Country. Country First.

I agree, country before partisan politics.

Our country needs to heal.

I don't believe everyone wants our country to be healed.

For instance, when democrats state our beliefs, we are accused of being whiners.

Those of us who voted for President Obama are accused of thinking he is the "Second Coming". I do not worship President Obama, but I do respect him.

JFK had his problems with religion, too. It was said at the time he was elected that the pope would be in charge of our government.

I am proud of my country today, right now, and so are my children and grandchildren.

I have been reading all of these posts, some seem to be for and some against our present administration !!! What I have found to be true is in 1964 the "Civil Rights Movement" was to raise the level of education of one group of people to the level of education of another group. After 45 years, our government has susceeded in lowering the level of education of all of our students. There isn't one in 5 of our high school grads that can tell time on an "analog" watch. Half of their parents don't know what an "analog" watch is!!!! We, as a whole, will never be able to educate our youth with all of the hatred that is being instilled into them !!! I just left a convience store getting gasoline, and could not make my purchase without hearing a bunch of RAP-CRAP from one of our upstanding young citizen's car radio !!! That is disturbing "MY" peace!!!! If I say something ,then I am racist, if I don't then I'm weak !!!! Damned if I do, Damned if I don't !!!!! Where is the POPO when you need them?????? Of course, if the POPO does anything, then they are "profiling" them!!!!

There are lots and lots of people out there who feel just the same way I do. They don't give a flying flip what color the president is (I mean, honestly... what difference does it make?!), they just don't agree with him. And they don't appreciate continually having their character and decency questioned for daring to disagree with him. Just my 2 cents.

Southernwoman - just out of sheer curiosity - how many times have you suffered an assault of noise pollution from opera in a public place? Because whenever someone pulls up next to me in traffic with their subwoofers vibrating the entire block, I fantasize about cranking up my trusty Puccini CD to the part where the tenor and soprano are hitting repeated high Cs, rolling down the window, and turning up the volume. I always resist the urge to do so. But if there is some such opera hot spot, I wish you'd let me know where it is. ; )

I can identify somewhat to the “mixed” factor. I too am mixed. You can imagine what my childhood life was like growing up in Natchez in the 50’s and not being accepted by either race. My childhood was a horrible experience for many reasons but mostly because my father was white and my mother was black. Let your imagination run wild for a minute and try to figure out how the maid became pregnant and had not only one child but four children for her big boss man. All this says to me is ……you’ll “rant” and “rave” on one side of the fence about race related things and after dark you enjoy the “forbidden fruits” on the other side with this race of people you profess to be this or that for whatever reason that suits your fancy at the time. I’m living proof and I didn’t get here by accident. As I read these blogs, it saddens me. I wonder what kind of people could be so divisive and write such hogwash. I tend to agree with Barney Franks, “What planet do you spend most of your time on?” This is not some 3rd world country. This is the United States of America and according to my history book, none of us are native to this continent except the Indians. So that means that your family and my family were immigrants somewhere down the line. Most of these blogs are just ridiculous. I would like to meet some of you bloggers face to face. I need to know if I’m spending my money in your businesses or if you are my doctor or my lawyer. This is scary.. ..you appear to be mean spirited people with a mean heart.

Let our president, as past presidents have done, address the children of this nation and encourage them to stay in school. I can guarantee you that some of the folks that are so against their children seeing his speech, have no problem showing their children hours of mind melting TV and Video trash on a daily basis.
===================================
I agree yeswecan... I am not an Obama fan, but my child watching one video is not going to brain wash him/her. I teach my child what to believe in. I give them their moral values and religious beliefs. Yes, some of the kids will be made the outcast for not believing in what he says.. But that is ok. When the public schools did the elections, the ones who didn't vote for obama were made to feel like they were racist or but kissers of white people. I teach my children to hold their heads high. I tell them peoples opinions are like seasons... they change, they can get heated and be very cold. Only you can decide what season you like the most.

Besides... most kids will use this time to take a nap.

mrmojorisin, I am not a people hater as you stated. I said nothing that would indicate that I hated Obama. I do, however, detest the Socialist, Marxist ideologies that he is leaning toward in his policy making decisions and the appointment of a self professed Communist as his advisor.

I would prefer that I taught my child the principles upon which the U.S.A. was founded rather than someone who does not appear to have any regard for what the U.S. Constitution stands for. Indoctrination was a key factor in the Communistic take over of a large portion of Europe. I would not let my child be influenced by someone other that a 100% American loving President. That does not mean that I am not a Christian. Because I didn't vote for Obama does not mean that I am not a Christian. Because I stated that the polls show that Obama's popularity is waning does not mean that I am not a Christian.

Because I simple point out the reasons I made the comment I did and I am not judging you for the assumption you made of me, I am a Christian.

These are the kinds of jobs Obama and his administration have planned for your kids. They will get a less than minimum wage stipend, a cell phone, a uniform from Timberland Outfitters, and 4700.00 if they accept the indoctrination offered. This is not all Obama's doing though, this is a bipartisan effort that's been building for years. It teaches democracy by teaching young people to give up individual rights for universal concerns. These clips are of what Americorps calls "Unity Rallies".

On the job training for Obama is showing horribly . I bet secretly he's thinking , what the hell is going on here ! This is not what I expected . And the road is getting bumpier on a daily basis . As Homer Simpson once said , " Jevus send us Superman ? "

At least its not too late. People are paying attention to what is going on in the White House.obama may think he needs civilian military but what he really has goes much further than neighborhood watch. That is what brought on this controversy with this subject. a good many of us on this site were afraid of what would happen when obama went into office. I can only pray our worst fears will never come. I hope the man is not evil, just misguided.

Christianity is the belief that a Cosmic(meaning travel through space)Jewish(you know what that is) Zombie(meaning you were dead and now you're not) can give you eternal life if you sacrificially eat his flesh, drink his blood, and telepathically tell him that he is your Savior so he can remove an evil force that was put in mankind by a (get this now) a ribwoman who was convienced by a TALKING SNAKE to eat from a magical tree. Sandbagger........Can you explain (and please don't answer that the lord works in mysterious ways) Why doesn't God ever help an amputee.

If you think Obama is helping this country...then you are delusional too.

And he is NOT black. Don't forget he is half WHITE.

Politics: I have no problem with Obama's race. I have a problem with him taking our constitutional rights away one by one.

Religion: I believe there is a wonderful God who watches over us and when the day comes that we meet our maker He will answer all of our questions. I pity those who have nothing to live for, but to die.

Obama talking to our kids: I didn't vote for obama, I will not vote for obama, and I do not like obama. However, I will not stop someone from encouraging my children. My children are smart and they know right from wrong. Nothing Obama can say will harm my children, because, as a family we are strong!

If your views differ from mine, GOOD for you. You may thank our soldiers and the founders of our country for that privilege. If you want to make sarcastic comments about my beliefs, go for it, it is your GOD given right, so have fun. If you want to call me names and PRESUME things about me, go for it, but do not call yourself a Christian. You have your opinions, I have mine and this is what makes human-kind so wonderful. WE DO NOT ALL THINK OR BELIEVE THE EXACT SAME WAY.... how boring would it be if we did.

Have a nice night!

If this about stay in school why would you stop the teaching just to show him on tv. They should show at night and let the parent hear it too because good learning starts at home and it may be something that some parents need to hear. My kid will not be watching it. Obama's hundred days wasn't even up before the car dealers and banks were asking for money or they was going to close there doors. When he was coming up with his healthcare plan he said AIG was behind him they came said they never where. If he wants to make a new healthcare plan make it where you can afford to go to the doctor. We should put prayers back in school. There is only stimuls plan that we need to go by and it started years ago and if you need more info on it read the HOLY BIBLE and it will tell you every thing. I pray that we all can unite and follow out GOD'S plan.

Brock, I have thought the same thing so many times. I know the situation is not comical, but I have laughed so many times picturing obama scratching his head and asking, "What in the world has happened? These people are suppose to love me, worship me, adore me. They're throwing stones at me...." I makes for a funny mental cartoon when I get depressed about him and his co-horts. I also picture him stating " (NOW LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR), I will not stand for this!!!!!!, and laugh that much more.

I don't know if anyone else feels as I do, such as: If this person is not impeached from office or imprisoned for treason, we will have to pay him his salary for the rest of his life. Is anyone aware of these facts? Just to know the America, that he hates so much will have to pay that much money to him. That makes me sick to my stomach.

"1/16th black = black"

Really?!?!?!

Why can't it be 1/16th White=White? Or in the case of the President, 1/2=White?

And in case you are wondering...I am NOT white. The reason I said this was to dispel any notion that I don't like the president because of the color of his skin.

I don't agree with his policies and I sure as hell don't want him speaking to my kids and indoctrinating them.

mr. mojo commented on the white people sending their children to private schools. Their are some white people that can't afford to send their children to private schools. Also talking about Intergrated or segregated you can go to any of the public schools and just see how many whites are in each class. Some of them just have one. I have always been told and have told my children not to judge anyone that God made us all. By the way I am not prejudice.

agree yeswecan...

Something good will come of this speech. Awareness. Awareness of politics and hopefully, the importance of staying in school. I don't believe it should be made mandatory and I believe our educators should keep their personnal beliefs to themselves. That is one place where a lot of trouble could arise. It's tricky. No politics in the workplace or the schools. Is that a form of censorship?

we get to see Obama act as a role model, hhhmmm .....well the school kids sure need that...

and the kids will love getting to take a break from their studies and kill some time fooling around watching that elephant eared goofball make more promises he can't keep....but I agree, the text submitted for everyone's approval is fine, if he sticks to it, I just hope the teleprompter doesn't fail and he has to adlib....then we're in for trouble...

Posted by meandmy3js (anonymous) on September 8, 2009 at 10:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

i don't think there is anything wrong with the students watching the presidential address today on TV. They need to be knowledgeable of what is taking place in the world around them and what they have to look forward to in the future. Some kids only know what they are taught at home and some of it is how they were raised. Whether it is to hate white, blacks, or whatever race that is not in your immediate family. So having the kids exposed to things like politics is a good thing. Not all bad. I work with high school students of all races and I observe their behaviors and actions because thats my job and I really believe this world is gonna be in trouble if they don't get some knowledge instilled in their head about the world around them. mississippi is the most racist dam state on the map because we are still stuck in those times.

Great speech! Take all the negative words back nay-sayers!

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on September 8, 2009 at 11:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I listened to the speech, it was ok, I had no problem with it for the most part, but--some things I will pick at-

1) it was a little hypocritical for on one hand he was saying you"ll (the children) never achieve those big paying jobs (rappers, athletic stars, etc) but he's expecting great things from these students...hmmm , that's a little confusing...

2) Yes the talk about personal responsibility was good - now let's see if Obama will practice what he's preaching by talking about putting everyone back to work by lowering the minimum wage (so school kids can have unskilled labor work while they are young ) and lowering ALL personal income taxes and corp taxes so business owners can make profits and hire somebody - that's where the problems are in our economy. So Mr. President take responsibility and do the right thing for our country, by setting the right example!

3) He was talking about expecting GREAT THINGS- well what about just being a good American and living a normal life, taking care of yourself, your family, your community and being humble, we don't need GREAT THINGS, we need normal things.......He should have talked more about how being GREAT, is just doing the normal good thing. There are so many unsung heroes in our country, these kids should realize that. He should have emphasized that you don't have to get a medal to be a hero for your family and your community.

4) This little speech was just a ploy to spike his approval ratings by playing it safe and appealing to all the moderates. He's trying to swing his image back to the middle from the FAR LEFT. We heard nothing more than what the kids will hear from their teachers and parents (or at least are supposed to) everyday.

Frankly, in my opinion this was one of the worst speeches Obama has given, as it was pretty weak and hypocritical...

Posted by iomo (anonymous) on September 8, 2009 at 11:46 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Not just picking - you are nit - picking krogers. Why shouldn't children hear that the president is just as concerned about their education as their teachers and parents? This man can't breathe without a negative comment from some people.

Posted by Krogers (anonymous) on September 8, 2009 at 11:59 a.m. (Suggest removal)

like I said- for the most part it was OK

but ......weak and hypocritical

I just hope he practices what he's preaching.......

be responsible

cut taxes and lower the minimum wage- then we can put people back to work.

All economists agree on these two critical factors- lower the minimum wage- a direct impact FOR THE BETTER will happen for student age and unskilled workers- they will get jobs by the millions.......

I know I cannot afford to hire student unskilled labor for $7+/hr.....hold their hand and teach them every little thing, only to have them vanish on a whime.....

I have an idea . . . why don't all you naysayers SHUT UP! That would go a long way in solving the pollution problem and it will also prevent your kids from being poisoned by your venom!

Hatred and bigotry starts at home, too. Nobody's force-feeding your kids garbage but YOU! Try being an American -- united we stand . . . divided we fall.

That's just food for thought!

Krogers, that man could bend over backwards to please you and you'd still find fault.

In the first place, you're the one who's politicizing that speech, which was merely a call for children to stay in school and study. No politics in it whatsoever. He said and did absolutely nothing wrong.

Secondarily, he DIDN'T tell them they'd never be great things. He said those things probably wouldn't happen. Because they probably won't.

How many people have the genes and talent to make it on a professional sports team? How many of us become big stars or land a stint on a reality TV show? Damned few of us. And it's unrealistic to think you can slide by in school on the hope that you're gonna be a big star just as soon as you're discovered. That's all he was saying.

The rest of it was just you bellyaching because you feel powerless and weak. Coming in here mouthing off makes you feel like a big man. You're the only one putting words in his mouth and intentions in his head that aren't there. You'd hack off your own leg if you thought it would bring that man down.

All these morons screaming about him brainwashing your children are too late. You're already doing a great job of brainwashing them thumping your Bibles and living a life that would horrify Jesus if he were here to see it.
