Eight to run for sheriff

Published Friday, September 4, 2009

NATCHEZ — When the clock struck 5 p.m. in the Adams County Circuit Clerk’s Office qualifying ended for the 2009 Adams County Sheriff’s race.

“If they aren’t qualified by now, they’re not running,” clerk Eddie Walker said.

Eight candidates have qualified.

This year’s candidates are: Natchez Police investigator Danny Barber, former Adams County sheriff’s deputy and current Adams County Constable Ray Brown, former director of the Metro Narcotics Unit Cliff Cox, head of the NPD’s Criminal Investigations Department Sgt. Craig Godbold, Adams County Sheriff’s deputy Randy Freeman, Adams County Youth Court Administrator and former deputy Chuck Mayfield, former NPD officer Roosevelt Owens Jr. and wildlife and fisheries game warden Greg Wisner.

To have qualified for the race the candidates must have submitted a petition of at least 50 signatures from registered Adams County voters and submitted a letter of intent to run in the race.

Now that the qualification period has closed Walker and his staff will begin to verify that at least 50 signers of each petition are active voters and registered to vote in Adams County.

“After that we just need to print the ballots,” Walker said.

This year’s special election was prompted by the March death of former Adams County Sheriff Ronny Brown.

Brown’s wife, Angie Brown, has served as interim sheriff since her husband’s death.

How many of the "former" folks got fired or left jobs to keep from getting investigated or fired?

I don't know about the other candidates, but if I were back home, I'd be voting for RAY BROWN. Ray was a shy, but funny, high school football player who took his responsibilities very seriously. He has a strong work ethic that will help him succeed at everything he does. Ray has become a very mature and responsible young man who would apply those same strengths to being Sheriff of Adams County. Good luck, Ray.

I've known Chuck for 35 years; he's a smart, honest, compassionate Natchezian who has donated many hours of service to community projects.

Chuck proved his ability as an Adams County Deputy Sheriff and Metro Narcotics Director. The only reason he's still not at the Adams County Sheriff's Department is because when a new Sheriff was elected, (Ronny Brown), he hired all new personnel.

Chuck has attended law enforcement training schools throughout the country; he is well-known throughout the State of Mississippi as a dedicated law enforcement officer.

I think they are all Great , any of them will make a Great Sheriff. May the man with the most votes win. If you want to help someone get in office give them some money , You could also pay for your signs that you put in your yard, Good Luck to all , Keep it clean as I know you will.

Please take the time to look at each candidates' qualifications. The clear choice is Chuck Mayfield. Do not vote for the one with the most money, or the one who comes from 'good people' or the funny high school football player...Take this election seriously.

Chuck. Enough said! :0)
I pray that the election is a "clean" one too. If someone has to stir up junk in order to get themselves elected, they obviously don't need to be there. Your character and credentials should speak loud and clear, and I believe Chuck Mayfield's does exactly that.

HillsideManor,
I've done as you have advised. Which is why my clear choice is Randy Freeman. I wish the best of luck to all candidates, however. There are several candidates who would be great for the job.

I too think Chuck is the best choice. Like another post said the money canidates will work this election big time. With so many running it will be easy to split votes. With enough money any election can be bought.

I really like Chuck as a person and as a law enforcement officer. My only concern is that he may still have too close of ties to a former sheriff's political cronies. I hope he can demonstrate in the next months that he is his own man, not controlled by a certain group of funders. If so, then I will support him 100% .

Randy Freeman will get my vote.

Posted by mrmojorisin (anonymous) on September 4, 2009 at 10:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I've known Chuck since way back when he was Janet Mayfield's little brother. He loves God, his family and Natchez.

He is a good man.... Honest as the day is long.... He has an unpretentious, humble way about himself that almost hides the strength of character and experience he possesses....

His transition into the office will be a smooth one, because he knows what it's like to scramble for a job because you backed someone other than the guy who got elected.... Chuck is not like that, he's not vain or vindictive...He's just like the most of us John Doe's out here, he's not perfect, but he is fair, and you can trust him to do what he says.

And isn't that the true stock of the man we want operating as the chief law enforcement officer in our county? A man we can trust and rely on to do what's right, not what's popular.

The money boys can't do that. They owe somebody. They are politicians, not lawmen, and we need a lawman for this job.

So vote for Janet's little brother, he has grown up into a fine man.

RAY RAY He's our Man, he can do it, Yes HE can !!!!!!! I am not familiar with all of the men running for the position of Adams County Sheriff, but I can say Ray is the one who gets the vote from everyone in my family. I hope that the residents of Adams County will too mark their vote for the best choice and candidate, Mr. Ray Brown.

The only thing I have to say is I'm not sure of whom I will vote for, because as for myself looking at the candidates listed above both black and white, I don't think any of them will ever be able to come close of doing the things that our beloved former Sheriff Ronnie Brown has done. But I'm going to just pray that God will let each and everyone of you chose the right person that are capable of being the Sheriff for the remainding of the 2 years left. Siouxlady I agree with you I were hoping that Chief Sims would have consider in becoming our sheriff for the remainding of the 2 years, because if any man can complete the job, that our former sheriff started on would be Charie Sims. I hope who ever win, that they consider keeping Chief Sims with you all, because if any man can carry us on out for these 2 years than I know he's the man.

GO GODBOLD

Posted by bulldoglady (anonymous) on September 4, 2009 at 3 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My vote is for Cliff Cox because he has the best credentials. Cliff has a masters degree in criminal justice, has several years experience as a deputy, and even more as Commander of Metro Narcotics. Both Cliff's Mother and Father are attorneys, giving Cliff exposure to the law from a young age. Of course, Cliff has always been a law abiding citizen and supporter of Natchez and Adams county. He and his wife both grew up and are raising their three children here. Thanks, Cliff, for always giving 100 percent in the past. I know you will as our sheriff too!

I know Chuck and I knew Ronny... so many of you liked Ronny Brown as sheriff, and so did I. One thing I can tell you about Chuck is he is more like Ronny Brown than even he will admit.

For one thing, he is color-blind like Ronny. His justice is justice for all. You should see the way he works with young people, the way he cares for them like he would his own child. And a lot of these kids are pretty grown up for their age as far as street smarts, but Chuck handles them. With a gentleness and understanding he brings them back to him and in the end most of them want nothing more than to please Chuck, and make him proud of them.

On the other hand, he's dealt with some pretty scary hombres, and his fearlessness, directness, and instinct usually serves to bring things to a peaceful close. He told me once that you don't have to stand all that tall to these characters, but you do have to stand up to them. He said it let's them know your words carry weight and truth.

He is a good man and will make an excellent sheriff.

peace&hope.......jimi

Chuck Mayfield has my vote. I hope he wins yours, too.

Posted by verdi (anonymous) on September 4, 2009 at 5:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

In reference to Mr. Cox, he appears to be the only candidate who spent his time and effort earning a masters degree in criminal justice (from USM). Therefore, making him the most educationally qualified person for the job. Mr. Cox also has a great rapport with all local, state, and federal agencies relating to the position of sheriff. If you're looking for a beer-drinking good old boy, vote for someone else. Mr. Cox is a professional law enforcement officer and a very serious family man.

Chuck is the most qualified and honorable even though he has been hard on me whenI needed it

Posted by mrmojorisin (anonymous) on September 4, 2009 at 5:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

"Beer drinking good old boys"? Verdi-- I too went to college, and everything I learned there was fine, but when I went to work, everything changed. Academia is for academics, the real world is completely different.

It takes people skills, honor, and propriety to achieve in the real world. It's not who you know, but what you know and how you came to know it. And learning to be a good sheriff doesn't come from books, it comes from being in the trenches and natural instinct. Great rapport with agencies who have no rapport with one another means jumping from one foot to the other, kissing behinds, and traveling with the money...we don't need that. We need leadership, someone others will follow and emulate.

We need Chuck Mayfield.

i say Danny Barbor, i think he is the most qualified. he has been a constable, a judge, sheriff dep. and a police officer. he is good with people and has always been fair. if my memory serves me right he has been a road officer since 1980 and the others while good dont have that knowledge.

this is what gets me randy says experience you can trust, however he spent most of his time as a jailer.

i dont want to get on ole cliff cox, he is a piece. the whole police and sheriff dept dont like him, he is cocky. money dont buy happiness fella.

the others i like them but they are great were they are at now.

The extremely highly educated are like the old Armstrong mud grips that Sears used to sell. They have just enough tread on them to get you stuck in the mud. We had geniuses at IP for years, they slowed down the paper production at the least and a lot of them got in the way and had no idea how to work with workers who did the repititous hard work and made the paper IP sold and made a good profit on. Hard knocks in the streets and working and living the job is much more important than all they degrees. Most degrees make good talkers or bad politicians,we have plenty of them on automouth telling lies. i would vote for the experienced man that,s been in the middle of it all. Makes common sense. He,ll keep doing a good job if he,s been doing a good job. Sounds like Chuck meets all that.

I introduce to the citizens of Adams County, SHERIFF RAY BROWN!

I have some questions about Cliff Cox.. He said that he has 20 years experience in law enforcement. Can anyone tell me how old he is? Because i believe he is in his mid 30's( not positive ). My point is that if so, he would have started at around 15 years old.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Cliff Cox. He is a true professional. I believe he is running for the law not the money.

Posted by verdi (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Mrmojorisin, education AND being in the trenches make a good sheriff. Mr. Cox spent a number of years as a deputy and ran the Metro Narcotics Unit for some years. He has been hospitalized during this time after fighting drug dealers.
Jughead -- C.T. Kelly is giving away your age.
Gunther 57, Chuck Latham, an outstanding black deputy, andorsed Cliff for sheriff. You speak falsely when speaking of the whole sheriff's department or police department. Please speak more accurately and promote your man and not lie about others. Speaking truthfully and accurately makes you a better person.

Posted by riverat (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 10:02 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I voted for Ronny Brown in the last election because I knew he would run the sheriff's office fairly, and not like his own personal dynasty. Under his watch, the sheriff's office once again became about the people of Adams County and promoted crime prevention as well as community protection. They were involved in many, many citizen-driven prevention activities and developed a relationship with the community that was positive and open. I know all the candidates running and can only say that there are two that will continue that legacy...Chuck and Ray Brown. I truly believe that either one of these men would do a great job. I have worked closely with Chuck for many years and know him to be highly professional, deeply committed, and a great communicator. I have heard that Mr. Brown has the same attributes. My guess is that these two will be in a run-off and it can only mean a "win-win" situation for our community, regardless of the final outcome.

Posted by busterb (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 2:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

gunter57 you made the best choice for sheriff, Danny Barber. Danny knows the law and how to apply it fairly to everyone, not just special interest. Danny Barber communicates well with all people and would make Adams County a great sheriff. People really need to sit down and think before electing the next sheriff. Danny Barber was the best justice court judge Adams County every had, I wish he was still there. Danny heard a case i was involved in and worked the matter out without either side getting upset. Communication skills and applying the law! He's my choice.

verdi, apparently you don't know the real Chuck L! If $ and distrust are involved, he'll be there! Look who sent out a letter supporting Cliff Cox ! Chuck L !!!

Posted by TigerLily (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 8:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Verdi- being injured on the job does not mean you have more experience. Many law men are injured on the job and that does not make them any more qualified than the next guy. A masters degree is all well and good but it only prepares you for the job, it is not the same as practical experience. Chuck Mayfield was also head of the Metro Narcotics and he and his team were pioneers in the drug wars in Adams County. Chuck is an experienced intelligent man who would make an admirable leader.

yeah most of the wisners are good people except greg he's just as arrogant as cliff cox, most law enforcement officers do not get hurt on the job because they don't make stupid mistakes.cliff was given that job because daddys money supported ronnys first election.as far as chuck latham no one cares for him much either.GOOD LUCK RAY BROWN,RANDY FREEMAN,AND CHUCK MAYFIELD.THESE ARE THE ONLY REAL CANIDATES IN THIS ELECTION.AS FAR AS CLIFF DRINKING BEER HE HAS NO FRIENDS TO DRINK AND SOCIALLIZE WITH.
