What is this?
White knight needed for Arlington
Published Sunday, October 25, 2009
Recent reports about the deplorable condition of one of our historic houses in Natchez causes me great concern.
The antebellum house Arlington must be saved. I understand much effort has been put forth by individuals and groups to slow its deterioration. The results have not been adequate for its salvation.
This is my plan for support by an individual or a group to rescue this treasure before its too late. A white knight is needed, but public and private support must be shown by lovers of historic structures from across America.

Just don't expect it to be the "White Knights of the Wilkinson County Board of Supervisors". They are ignoring the beautiful but falling down county courthouse and jail and planning on using $3.15 million to build a new jail on Hwy 51 south of Woodville. I'm sure it will be just as attractive as the sheriffs dept. out there. Just think of what kind of improvements could be made on the old jail with that kind of money? Thank your lucky stars that Natchez doesn't have the "Woodville" mentality.

Maybe we are thinking too small regarding this situation. It's time to bring in the big guns! Why not write an informational letter to the Smithsonian Museum & Archives, Washington, D.C., and The National Heritage Trust. Utilizing and implementing our own Federal Senators and Congressmen for help in this plight may prove to be beneficial...

When comparing the value to the town of a recreational development and the survival of another private antebellum house, I would say that recreational dollars have a far more direct effect on our well-being here than would a house rescue expenditure. And comparing the use of federeal dollars for a home rehabilitation to the use of federal dollars for health care I would say the health care is far more cost-effective.
Just a note for those who think we use government too much anyway.
