Huntington gets win, ruins WCCA's playoff chances

FERRIDAY — The Huntington Hounds had the easy job Friday night — spoiler.

And thanks to a pair of touchdown runs by Kevin Brown in the fourth quarter as well as some big plays on defense, Huntington rallied for a stunning 28-14 win over Wilkinson County Christian Academy for its second straight win.

WCCA had a slim chance of making the Class AA playoffs before Friday, but the Hounds may have buried that.

“We had a huge game from Brown and (Jess) Dossett,” Huntington head coach Chad Harkins said. “Those guys just won’t give up. They played hard. They showed some maturity.”

Brown scored on a 6-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter to give the Hounds a 6-0 lead.

But early in the second quarter, Todd Gonda picked off a Dossett pass and returned it 8 yards for a touchdown and his extra point gave WCCA a 7-6 lead.

Dossett responded to his own miscue with a 58-yard touchdown run for a 12-7 Huntington lead. However, the Rams answered with Matthew McGraw scoring on a 13-yard run with 7:24 to go until halftime that would give them a 14-12 lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Huntington (3-7) took the lead for good at 20-14 on Brown’s 1-yard run and Dossett’s two-point conversion run with 8:03 to go in the fourth quarter. Brown scored again, this time on a 9-yard run with 2:08 left. He added the two-point conversion run.

Brown had a great game on both sides of the ball. He finished with 22 carries for 121 yards, one catch for 27 yards, and 14 tackles, two of them for a loss, from his defensive line position.

Not to be outdone, Dossett completed five-of-eight passes for 83 yards and he had eight tackles at linebacker.

WCCA (4-5) was led by Tip McKenzie, who had 16 carries for 151 yards, and McGraw, who had seven carries for 88 yards.
