La. man pleads no contest to incest charges

Published Friday, October 23, 2009

VIDALIA — The aggravated incest trial of a Concordia Parish man ended Thursday when he pleaded “no contest” to the charges.

Charles Ables was on trial facing four counts of aggravated incest. He had originally pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.

The trial, which began Wednesday, did not hear testimony Thursday.

A “no contest” pleading ultimately has the same effect as a “guilty” plea, Seventh Judicial District District Attorney Brad Burget said.

“Instead of saying, ‘I am guilty,’ it is saying, ‘I am not contesting the charges,’” Burget said.

The prosecution did not expect Ables to change his plea mid-trial, but Burget said it is not uncommon for defendants to do so.

“I have had defendants on different cases plead during trial, and I have had defendants plead after the jury has gone to deliberate,” Burget said. “Every case is different, but once they plead, that will conclude the trial.

“We are pleased the matter concluded without having to put a child through the trial.”

Following Ables’ pleading, Judge Glenn Gremillion ordered a pre-sentencing investigation to be performed by the Louisiana Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Division.

A pre-sentencing investigation is designed to give the judge background information in regard to the nature of the offense, and any past criminal nature and work history of the defendant, Burget said.

Ables will be sentenced Jan. 8. The minimum sentence for each count of aggravated incest is five years prison, and the maximum sentence is 20 years.

Ables was originally arrested in January 2007. The case involved one victim.

Give him 80 years. If he lives long enough to get out, he should be harmless by then.

He is not man enough to just say I'm guilty, its like saying OK instead of saying YES. But I am happy with this plea. Sooner or later he will get whats coming to him.

For those who still won't believe he is guilty.

It not uncommon for the close relatives of a molester to adamantly deny that the molester did anything wrong.
It is always someone else's fault that he got into this mess.

That is how these sick individuals keep getting access to children, because some people just won't face the truth. So the cycle of abuse continues.

In this case, he hadn't been brow beat. He just thought no one would do anything to him about it. Guess he thought wrong.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I am not guilty of something, I will not admit to it. I will fight tooth and nail to establish my innocence.

He did it, he knows he did it, and now most everyone else knows he did it too!

It has taken 3 years from time of arrest to time of sentencing. This is unreal. I hope he was not on the streets while he awaited trail.

He was not only on the streets. He worked/works at the local Farm Co-op in Vidalia. If I am not mistaken he only served a total of 8 days when he was arrested all that time ago. So that means a convicted sex offender HAS been & WILL be walking the streets untill Jan 08, 2010....Before he will be sentenced for this crime.

Being the coward he is, they need to lock him up. For he might deside to take his own life and get the easy way out. Cowards are like that, we've all seen it threw the years. Lock him up until sentence in handed down. And then, let them in the prison system do what they do to people like this. Convicts might be convicts, but they too, hate people like Charles Ables, and they DO take care of people like that . Look what they did to Jeffrey Dalmer. Imagine that !!!!
He deserves everything the ones inside do to him, even if it causes him death. This is one sorry individual. Burn in hell Charles, for doing what you did, and doing it to your own daughter you sorry SOB ~~~~

There are more sex offenders on the streets than most of us even think about. In Florida, police are questioning 171 offenders who live within 5 miles of the little girl who was raped and murdered there last week. And this one was in the childs home. What kind of world are we living in?

You touch my child and you die. Simple as that. I don't care who you are. Family member or friend. Their isn't a place in the world you'll be able to hide from me.

He will spill all the details as he's being prepared for casteration. If not throw him in in a cell with the casterated parts for his last meal.

I agree with "mseyes47", if it was my child there wouldn't have been a waste of taxpayers money; he would want the police to get to him first before I would have and the police to keep him; because there is no place on this earth he could go I wouldn't find him. Insanity is what would happen to him when I got ahold of him.
